What all-terrain tires fit a Subaru Crosstrek without a lift
A stock Crosstrek takes all-terrain tires with no lift up to roughly 28.5 inches tall, which is about 225/65R17 on the factory wheel. That keeps you inside the 10 percent diameter rule. Anything taller or wider starts rubbing at full lock, and real clearance becomes the honest fix.
Fitting all-terrain tires to a Crosstrek with no lift is the most common first upgrade we see, and it produces more guesswork than any other. There is no single magic size. What you have is a diameter budget, a width budget and a wheel offset, and together they decide whether the front tire clears the strut, the liner and the fender at full steering lock. Start with diameter, because diameter is what breaks things
The general rule across the tire industry is to stay within 10 percent of factory rolling diameter. That is standard guidance rather than a Whiteline test result, and on an all-wheel drive Subaru it carries more weight than on a front driver, because every wheel is tied into the same driveline and a diameter mismatch feeds a permanent speed difference into the center differential.
Run the arithmetic on the GU Crosstrek and it gets simple. The two factory fitments across the range, 225/60R17 and 225/55R18, both land around 27.6 to 27.7 inches tall. Ten percent above that is roughly 30.4 inches, so on paper you have almost three inches to spend. You never spend all of it, because the front wheel wells run out of room long before the driveline does.
Taller tires also slow your speedometer and odometer by roughly the percentage they add in diameter, so an indicated 60 mph on a 3 percent larger tire is nearer 62 mph. That calibration shift explains many of the gas mileage complaints that follow a tire upgrade.
Width, offset and backspacing decide where the rubbing happens
Diameter tells you whether a tire clears the fender under compression. Width and offset tell you whether it clears the strut housing inboard and the liner outboard when the wheel is turned.
Factory Crosstrek wheels sit at a high positive offset, in the region of the high forties to low fifties in millimeters, which tucks the tire inboard toward the strut. Adding section width on that wheel eats inboard clearance first, so a 245 section tire on a factory offset wheel fights the strut before it ever touches plastic. Dropping to a lower offset, somewhere in the mid thirties to low forties, pushes the same tire outboard and buys that room back, which is why owners running wider all-terrains usually change wheels too.
That trade has a cost. Lower offset increases scrub radius and works the wheel bearing and steering harder, so you feel more tugging over ruts. We would rather you gained clearance from the suspension and left wheel geometry near where Subaru put it.
Full lock and full compression are two different tests
Rub reports are almost always one of two events needing different fixes. Contact at full lock at low speed is a width and offset problem, showing up on the liner at the leading edge of the wheel well. Contact under full compression is a diameter and travel problem, showing up at the top rear of the well. Raising ride height does little for the first, and a wheel spacer does nothing for the second.

Diameters below are calculated from the size markings, so they are arithmetic rather than measurements of a mounted tire. The fitment column reflects what Crosstrek owners widely report running, not a Whiteline tested list, and tread pattern and sidewall shape vary enough that two tires of one nominal size can behave differently.

Diameter is not what stops you on this car. Somewhere between 235 and 245 section width the front wheel well stops cooperating, and every extra inch after that is paid for in trimming, offset changes or accepted noise.
When trimming stops being a fix
Trimming the front liner and rolling the pinch weld buys you a size, and plenty of owners are happy there. What trimming cannot give you is travel. Cut the plastic away and the tire still reaches the same point under compression, so a loaded car on a rough road arrives there with less material to warn you.
Clearance is the version that lasts. Our Trail Activated kit for the 2024 to 2026 Crosstrek GU raises the car 1.2 inches front and rear on King springs with Whiteline-tuned dampers, and it ships as four fully assembled strut and shock units, so your fitter is never compressing a spring on the bench. Subaru publishes 8.7 inches of ground clearance on a standard Crosstrek and 9.3 inches on the Wilderness, which puts a lifted standard car comfortably past the Wilderness with the wheel well opened up to match.
The kit also includes a rear subframe spacer kit and front camber correction, which is how we hold driveline and alignment geometry closer to factory rather than raising the body and hoping. We specify a front and rear wheel alignment, install time is 4 hours, and in the US we back it with a Limited Lifetime warranty. It excludes the Wilderness trim.
Because this is a complete engineered suspension system for modern crossover platforms rather than a spacer under a factory strut, it retains factory droop travel, and that matters for tire clearance. A suspension that tops out early on a rutted road stops following the surface and throws more compression at the other corner, which is where a marginal tire finds the top of the wheel well.
Standard Duty or Heavy Duty with a bigger tire
If the car permanently carries a rooftop tent, drawers, tools or a full cargo area, the Heavy Duty version uses a rear spring built for a constant load of roughly 440 lb, so the back stays up and your new tires keep the clearance you fitted them for. Heavy Duty kits are built for consistently loaded vehicles though, and they are not intended for regular unloaded use, so a Crosstrek that is normally empty belongs on Standard Duty.
