Modest heights often pass without incident, headlamp aim almost always needs attention, and only your installer or dealer can confirm policy for your model year.
Every competitor page on this subject says the same eleven words, that ADAS recalibration may be necessary, and then stops. Nobody tells you what EyeSight is actually referencing, when a lift starts to matter, or what to ask before you hand over the keys. How EyeSight actually sees the road
EyeSight uses two cameras at the top of the windshield either side of the mirror, a fixed distance apart. Each sees the scene from a slightly different position, and the system measures the horizontal offset between the two images to calculate distance. That is stereo vision, and its accuracy comes from geometry staying exactly as calibrated.
Depth alone is not enough. To decide that a shape is a car in your lane rather than a sign over the next one, the system has to know where the road surface sits in the image. That mapping assumes a known camera height above the road and a known pitch attitude for a vehicle sitting at its designed ride height. Change how the car rests and you shift where the road plane falls in the frame.
What a lift changes, and what it does not
Static ride height
The cameras rise with the body, so they look at the road from higher up. A uniform increase of a little over an inch is small in a system designed with real tolerance for a loaded car, worn springs and four passengers. It is not zero, so have it checked rather than assumed.
Rake, the front to rear difference
This matters more than height. If the front rises more than the rear, or the reverse, the whole car pitches and the cameras aim slightly up or down relative to the road, which tilts the exact plane the calibration defines. Our Bilstein kits publish matched front and rear figures, 1.5 inches on the 2019 onward Forester and 1.75 inches on the 2014 to 2018 car, so your installer knows the attitude change instead of discovering it.
Tire diameter
A taller tire raises the car too, and throws off the wheel speed signal that safety systems reference for speed and distance. Staying within 10 percent of the factory rolling diameter is the general rule, worth following on any car with driver assistance.
Alignment and thrust angle
A lift moves camber, toe and thrust angle, and a car that tracks slightly crab does not point its cameras where it is going. Our Forester kits list a wheel alignment as required for exactly this reason, and it should never be treated as optional. On the Crosstrek GU 2024 to 2026 and RAV4 A50 2019 to 2025 kits we include front camber correction in the box, so the front end is brought back into specification at the alignment rather than left sitting outside the adjustment range.

Headlamp aim is a separate and equally real job
People conflate the two because both point something at the road. EyeSight is passive and looks outward, while headlamps project a beam with a defined cutoff so oncoming drivers are not blinded. Raise the car and that cutoff climbs the road ahead, which is antisocial at best and a citation at worst. Aim is a mechanical adjustment at the housing and takes very little time, so ask for it in writing on the job card.
What a responsible install includes
A shop doing this properly measures ride height at all four corners before the job, fits the kit, lets the suspension settle, measures again, performs a full alignment, resets headlamp aim, and then addresses driver assistance. Our Forester and Outback kits are quoted at around six hours of install labor, and calibration sits outside that figure, so ask for it to be priced separately.
Will a dealer recalibrate a lifted Subaru
Some will without comment, while others decline on modified vehicles as a matter of policy. Independent ADAS specialists exist in most metro areas and often run the same targets and software. Policy, availability and price vary by dealer and region, so call before you book the install and get the answer from the service manager.
What happens if you skip it
Usually nothing dramatic, which is the problem. Owners report a system that becomes slightly more eager or more reluctant than it was, adaptive cruise that picks up a car a beat later, or lane centering that feels less certain on a crowned road. That erodes trust in something you rely on. If EyeSight throws a warning or disables itself after the install, have it read rather than treating it as a quirk.
