The first sign is usually a noise, not a feeling
Model 3 owners rarely notice a control arm going off through the steering. They hear it first.
A creak or groan at low speed while turning, most obvious pulling out of a driveway or maneuvering in a parking lot, typically points at the front upper control arm ball joints. Tesla has itself treated this as a noise condition rather than a failure, publishing a service procedure to reseal front upper ball joints on 2018 to 2020 cars and describing it in its own bulletin as an NVH condition that does not lead to premature failure.
A crunch or grinding when turning sharply at low speed, or lock to lock while stationary, more often traces to the front lower compliance or radius arm bushing.
A single knock or clunk over a sharp bump, from one corner, is the one to take seriously. That is not characterful. Get it inspected rather than diagnosed from an internet thread, because a knock can be a worn bushing and it can also be a fastener or joint that needs immediate attention, and the two feel similar from the driver's seat.
Vague steering, wandering at highway speed, or uneven inner shoulder tire wear develops as the bushings and joints lose their location accuracy. By this point the wear has been there a while.
Why replacement costs what it does
Two reasons, and neither is really about the price of steel.
The arms are sold and replaced as complete assemblies with the ball joint pressed in. The joints are not designed to be serviced separately, so a worn joint means a new arm. That is a design decision, not a markup.
The job also requires a wheel alignment afterwards, which is not covered by a vehicle warranty in its own right and adds cost regardless of who does the work. Owners regularly report multi thousand dollar quotes once several arms are done at once, because a car needing one worn arm often needs its neighbors too.

All arms ship as pairs with ball joints included. Whiteline covers them under warranty, and US listings show a Limited Lifetime warranty on much of the range, though warranty terms do vary by part and region, so check the part you are buying.
OE style rubber or Whiteline Polyurethane?
Whiteline gives you both, and the choice comes down to what you want out of the car.
WA532 uses OE style rubber bushings. If your priority is returning the car to factory feel with no change in noise or harshness, this is the straight replacement.
WA533 uses Whiteline polyurethane bushings. The poly holds its shape under load far better than rubber, which is the specific weakness of the original design on a car this heavy. You get more accurate wheel location, steering that stays precise as loads build, and a bushing that does not progressively soften. Whiteline's elastomer technology was developed to manage exactly the higher curb weights and load spikes that electric vehicles generate, which is the reason it belongs on a Model 3 rather than being an exotic option.
The common objection is that a firmer bushing means a noisier, harsher car. On a well engineered elastomer it does not work that way, because the material is tuned for NVH rather than simply made hard. What you feel is a front end that stops going vague, not a front end that starts crashing.
Why some owners are on their second or third set
This is the part rarely discussed. Because the factory arms are unserviceable assemblies, a failed joint means a new arm, and a new arm of the same design carries the same characteristics. Owners who replace like for like sometimes find themselves doing the job again.
Changing the bushing material and the joint quality is how you break that cycle, which is the practical case for fitting Whiteline arms rather than another set of the originals. If you want to correct geometry at the same time, KTA368 adds camber adjustment from minus 3.0 to plus 0.5 degrees, useful on a lowered car or one chewing its inner tire shoulders.
Can you keep driving on a worn control arm?
A creak is a nuisance. A knock, a clunk, new play in the steering, or visible movement at a joint is a different category, and the honest answer is do not gamble on it. Have it inspected promptly by a qualified workshop. Control arms locate the wheel, and there is no version of that going wrong that stays minor.
If you are being told the noise is normal and covered by nothing, that is worth understanding rather than arguing about. Tesla's vehicle warranty explicitly excludes normal noise and vibration including general knocks, creaks and rattles, and separately excludes wheel alignment. That is why so many owners find a creaking arm falls to them.
