Caster arms provide additional positive caster by changing front suspension geometry where the standard setup does not provide the required alignment. In applicable suspension designs, these components take the form of front lower control arms with built-in caster correction rather than conventional adjustable caster rods.
Caster arms for cars and 4WDs can serve different suspension requirements, so the component needs to match the vehicle's suspension design and the geometry being corrected. Changes in ride height, worn components and other suspension modifications can all affect alignment. Start with accurate measurements to determine whether caster correction is required before selecting an arm.
What Are Caster Arms?
Caster arms are suspension arms designed to alter caster by changing the position or geometry of the front suspension. On applicable setups, a front lower control arm can incorporate a predetermined offset that increases positive caster without requiring a separate adjustable caster rod.
The term ?caster arm? is also used for adjustable tension or caster rods on some suspension designs. These work differently from fixed-correction lower control arms.
For this reason, caster arms should be selected according to the suspension layout, mounting points and required correction rather than the component name alone.
What Does Caster Do?
Caster is the forward or rearward inclination of the steering axis when viewed from the side of the vehicle. Positive caster means the steering axis tilts rearward at the top and can contribute to steering self-centring and straight-line stability.
Caster is only one part of wheel alignment. The correct setting depends on the suspension design, ride height, tyres and intended alignment specification.
Increasing positive caster is not automatically better. Excessive or inappropriate settings can alter steering effort and other aspects of suspension behaviour, so correction should be based on measured geometry.
Positive Caster and Steering Feel
Positive caster creates a geometry that encourages the wheels to return towards the straight-ahead position after steering input.
Within an appropriate alignment setup, additional positive caster can contribute to:
- Stronger steering self-centring
- Improved straight-line stability
- More steering weight and feedback
- More consistent directional behaviour
The effect depends on the complete suspension geometry rather than caster alone.
Camber, toe, tyre characteristics, steering geometry and suspension compliance all influence how the vehicle ultimately feels.
Caster Wind-Back Under Braking
Caster is not determined only by static alignment measurements. Compliance in suspension bushes can allow geometry to change as braking forces load the suspension.
Lower-compliance bushings in applicable caster correction arms can help control this movement, reducing the amount of caster lost as the suspension is loaded under braking.
This can help maintain more consistent geometry, but the result depends on the suspension design and complete setup. Firmer bushings can also transmit more road feel than a softer arrangement, so reduced compliance involves a trade-off between suspension control and isolation.
Types of Front Caster Correction Arms
Front caster correction arms can use different geometry depending on the suspension design and amount of correction required. Some replace a lower control arm with a predetermined caster offset, while other designs may combine caster correction with changes intended to address geometry following a ride-height modification.
The correct type should be selected from the vehicle's actual alignment requirements.
Caster Correction Lower Control Arms
A caster correction lower control arm changes the relationship between the suspension mounting points to provide additional positive caster.
Applicable designs provide fixed geometry changes such as approximately +0.5? or +0.75? of caster, depending on the specific application. These figures are not universal adjustment ranges and should not be applied to every caster arm.
Some designs can also incorporate anti-lift geometry. Anti-lift changes the relationship between suspension mounting points to influence how the suspension reacts to longitudinal forces under braking and acceleration.
Because these geometry changes interact with the rest of the suspension, they should be considered as part of the complete setup rather than isolated upgrades.
Alignment Correction Arms for Lifted 4WDs
Increasing suspension ride height can alter front-end geometry on some 4WD suspension designs, including caster and camber.
Where the resulting alignment cannot be corrected using the existing adjustment range, a geometry-correcting lower control arm can reposition the suspension to help recover the required settings.
Some applications use a combination of arm geometry and separate camber bolts to provide the necessary correction.
The amount of lift alone should not determine whether correction arms are required. Measure the vehicle after its suspension changes and identify which alignment angles are outside the desired specification first.
Are Caster Arms Fixed or Adjustable?
Caster arms can be either fixed-correction or adjustable depending on their design. A fixed-correction arm uses predetermined geometry to provide a specified caster change, while an adjustable caster arm allows its effective position or length to be altered.
These approaches should not be treated as interchangeable.
A fixed arm can provide a known geometry change for its intended application. An adjustable design can provide a broader tuning range where the suspension is designed to accommodate it.
Check the specified correction method for the individual arm rather than assuming every product described as a caster arm is adjustable.
What Are the Signs a Vehicle May Need Caster Correction?
Caster correction may be worth investigating when alignment measurements show that the required caster setting cannot be achieved with the existing suspension adjustment. Changes in steering behaviour can provide clues, but symptoms alone cannot confirm incorrect caster.
Possible signs include:
- Reduced steering self-centring
- Wandering or reduced straight-line stability
- Steering that feels unusually light or vague
- A difference in steering behaviour after a ride-height change
- Caster measurements outside the required alignment specification
These symptoms can have many other causes.
Worn control arm bushes, ball joints, tie rod ends, wheel bearings, tyres, incorrect tyre pressures or other alignment settings can produce similar behaviour.
Inspect the suspension and measure the alignment before deciding that caster correction arms are required.
Should I Choose Caster Arms or Caster Bushes?
Caster arms and caster correction bushes can both alter suspension geometry, but they achieve the change differently. Which solution is appropriate depends on the suspension design, amount of correction required and condition of the existing components.
A caster correction bush changes geometry through an offset or revised mounting relationship within an existing suspension arm.
A caster correction arm replaces the arm itself and incorporates the required geometry into the complete component.
One approach is not universally better than the other. Use the correction method designed for the vehicle and confirm that it provides the adjustment required by the measured alignment.
How Are Caster Arms Fitted?
Fitting caster arms generally involves safely supporting the vehicle and front suspension, removing the existing suspension arm and installing the replacement at its specified mounting points. Because the arm directly influences wheel geometry, installation should always be followed by accurate alignment measurement.
What the Job Involves
Depending on the suspension design, installation may involve:
- Safely raising and supporting the vehicle
- Supporting relevant suspension components
- Removing the existing arm and mounting hardware
- Inspecting mounting points and surrounding components
- Installing the caster correction arm in the specified orientation
- Installing associated alignment hardware where applicable
- Checking component and tyre clearances
- Settling the suspension at normal ride height
- Tightening fasteners according to the specified procedure
Where compliant bushes are used, follow the applicable procedure for final tightening. Some bush designs should be tightened at normal ride height to avoid unintended preload.
Never work underneath a vehicle supported only by a jack. Use suitable stands or workshop lifting equipment and use a qualified technician where specialised suspension work is required.
Wheel Alignment After Fitting
A professional wheel alignment is required after fitting caster correction arms.
The alignment allows the resulting caster to be measured rather than assumed from the nominal correction built into the arm. Camber and toe should also be checked because suspension geometry works as a system and changing one component can influence other measurements.
The final settings should suit the vehicle and suspension configuration.
Choosing Caster Arms for Your Vehicle
Choose caster arms according to the vehicle's suspension design, front suspension position and amount of geometry correction required.
Start with current alignment measurements and confirm the required correction before choosing a component. Fitment assistance is available if you're unsure which caster correction arm is appropriate for your suspension setup.
