Whiteline anti roll bar lateral locks stop your anti roll bar sliding sideways through its mounts under cornering loads. They?re precision-machined alloy collars that clamp directly to the bar beside each mounting bush, keeping the bar centred so it works consistently on both sides of the vehicle. They also stop it shifting into nearby chassis or steering components.
Lateral locks suit both factory and aftermarket sway bars, also called anti-roll bars or stabiliser bars. They come in a range of sizes to match the bar diameter, and they can be fitted without removing the anti roll bar.
What Anti Roll Bar Lateral Locks Do
An anti roll bar is held to the vehicle?s body or subframe by two mounting bushes, usually D-shaped. The bar?s job is to twist as the body rolls in a corner, transferring load from one side of the suspension to the other to reduce body roll.
Lateral locks clamp onto the bar immediately next to each bush, on the inside or outside of the mount. They act as stops, so the bar can rotate freely in its bushes but can?t slide along its length. That keeps the bar in its designed position under all driving conditions.
Why Anti Roll Bars Shift Sideways
When a vehicle corners, weight transfers across the car and the anti roll bar is loaded heavily. If the bushes sit on a straight section of the bar, the cornering forces can push the bar sideways through the bushes. This is sometimes called ?walking?.
Bar shift is more likely with:
- Larger or stiffer aftermarket anti roll bars that carry higher loads
- Firmer bushes that allow the bar to slide rather than flex
- Aggressive driving, track use or frequent hard cornering
- Worn anti roll bar bushes that no longer grip the bar firmly
Benefits of Anti Roll Bar Lateral Locks
- Consistent handling: an anti roll bar?s stiffness depends partly on the distance from each bush to the end of the lever arm. When the bar shifts, that distance gets longer on one side and shorter on the other, so the bar?s effect becomes uneven. Lateral locks keep it balanced.
- Prevents fouling: a shifting bar can contact steering components, brake lines, the chassis or other parts. Lateral locks keep it clear.
- Longer bush life: sideways sliding wears the inside of the anti roll bar bushes. Preventing it helps bushes last longer.
- Reduced noise: stopping the bar moving reduces knocks and clunks from bar shift.
When Lateral Locks Make Sense
How much difference lateral locks make depends on three factors:
- Driving style: they?re most valuable for spirited road driving, track days, motorsport and vehicles that regularly take corners hard.
- Anti roll bar shape: bars with bushes mounted on a straight section are more likely to shift than bars where the bends naturally locate the bushes. Many aftermarket bars have locating features built in, while others benefit from added locks.
- Clearance: vehicles with tight packaging around the anti roll bar benefit most, as even small shifts could cause contact with other parts.
For a daily driver with a factory bar that doesn?t shift, lateral locks are optional. For a vehicle with an upgraded anti roll bar, firm bushes or tight clearances, they?re a small, inexpensive addition that protects the bar?s performance.
Lateral Locks and Anti Roll Bar Preload
Lateral locks don?t preload the anti roll bar or change its static load. They simply stop the bar moving along its length, while it still rotates freely in its bushes.
Preload is caused by anti roll bar links of uneven length, or by fitting the links with the vehicle at an uneven height. Always set anti roll bar links with the vehicle level and the suspension at normal ride height.
Limitations to Consider
Lateral locks are a simple upgrade with few drawbacks, but a few points are worth knowing:
- On some vehicles, the bar?s shape and bush positions already prevent meaningful shift, so locks add little.
- Locks must be positioned with a small working clearance from the bush, so they don?t rub on or compress it.
- A lock fitted over grease or dirt on the bar can slip. Clean the bar thoroughly where the lock will sit.
Choosing the Right Size
Lateral locks are sized by anti roll bar diameter. Measure your bar accurately with vernier callipers on a straight, clean section near the mounting bushes, then choose the lock that matches. Some locks cover a narrow range of diameters, so check that your measurement falls within the listed range.
Fitting Lateral Locks
Lateral locks can be fitted with basic hand tools, without removing the anti roll bar:
- Park the vehicle on level ground with the suspension at normal ride height.
- Clean the anti roll bar thoroughly where each lock will sit, removing grease, dirt and any loose coating.
- Centre the anti roll bar so it sits evenly between its mounts.
- Position each lock next to its bush, leaving a small clearance so it doesn?t press on the bush.
- Tighten the clamp bolts evenly to the specified torque.
- Check the locks after the first drive, and at each service, to make sure they haven?t moved.
Who Anti Roll Bar Lateral Locks Suit
Anti roll bar lateral locks suit drivers fitting an upgraded or adjustable anti roll bar, and enthusiasts chasing more consistent, predictable handling. They?re also used on track and motorsport vehicles that see high cornering loads, and on vehicles where the anti roll bar has shifted and contacted other components. Anyone replacing anti roll bar bushes who wants to protect them from wear will benefit too.

- SKU: KLL127 Benefit Note: To suit 27mm diameter sway bars - the DIY (Do It Yourself) alloy lateral locking system can be utilized on both factory and more importantly aftermarket sway bars. The locks are easily installed on car with no need to remove the sway bar to install. They are mounted directly next to the sway bar mounting points and prevent shifting or sideways movement of the sway bar under lateral (cornering) loads. This results in improved sway bar effectiveness whilst preventing fouling of the sway bar on near by chassis and steering components.
