Sway Bar & Sway Bar Kits for Toyota 86

Whiteline sway bars keep your Toyota 86 flatter through every corner, so the tires stay planted, steering feels sharper and you carry more speed with confidence. We make each bar from spring steel with forged ends, and many of our bars adjust across 2 to 4 positions so you can fine tune handling balance. Shop front, rear and complete front and rear sway bar kits, all covered by our limited lifetime warranty.

What does a sway bar do on your Toyota 86?

A sway bar connects the left and right wheels on the same axle and resists body roll when you turn. As the car leans, the bar twists and pushes the body back toward level, which keeps the car flatter, spreads cornering load more evenly across the tires and gives you more grip and a steadier feel through the steering wheel.

Most road cars leave the factory with a front bar, and many have a rear bar as well. Those factory bars are sized for comfort, cost and a safe dose of understeer. They were never designed around the way enthusiasts drive, which is where a Whiteline performance sway bar comes in.

Is a sway bar the same as a stabilizer bar?

Yes, sway bar, swaybar, stabilizer bar, anti-sway bar and anti-roll bar all describe the same part. Manufacturers and parts catalogs use the names interchangeably, so whichever term you search, the car sway bar you?re looking for does the same job.

How does a sway bar work on your Toyota 86?

At its core, a sway bar is a torsion spring that ties both sides of the axle together. The center section runs across the chassis in two mounting bushings, and the arms at each end connect to the suspension through sway bar links. When both wheels rise together over a speed bump, the bar rotates in its bushings and does very little. In a corner, the outside wheel compresses while the inside wheel extends, and that difference twists the bar. The twist resists roll and shares load back across the axle.

Two things set a bar?s stiffness: its diameter and the length of its lever arms. Diameter has the bigger effect, because the torsional stiffness of a solid bar rises with the fourth power of its diameter. A few millimeters on paper makes a big difference on the road.

Calculated for solid bars of equal length and arm geometry. Hollow bars and different arm lengths change the figures.

Lever arm length is the second tuning tool. Shortening the effective arm makes the bar stiffer and lengthening it makes the bar softer, which is exactly how our adjustable sway bars let you change the car?s behavior without swapping parts.

Why upgrade your Toyota 86 to a Whiteline performance sway bar?

Factory bars carry a built in bias toward comfort and understeer. Our aftermarket sway bars shift that balance toward grip and response, and because a sway bar only works when the body rolls, you gain cornering control without the harsh ride that comes from much stiffer springs. Here?s what changes when you bolt one on:

• Flatter cornering: less lean keeps the car composed through quick direction changes, freeway on ramps and tight back roads.
• More grip: cornering load spreads more evenly across the tires, so each one does a fairer share of the work.
• Sharper turn in: the car responds to your steering sooner because it isn?t waiting for the body to settle.
• Better tire wear: tires stay flatter and more upright through bends, which saves the shoulders from extra punishment.
• A calmer cabin: with less body movement, passengers get thrown around far less on a winding road.

Spring steel with forged ends

We build Whiteline sway bars from spring steel with forged ends, then powder coat them to resist corrosion. Our engineers have spent more than 30 years developing handling parts on the street and at the track, and every bar is designed for a specific vehicle platform rather than a generic one size fits all fit.

Adjustable Toyota 86 sway bars for precise tuning

Many of our bars are 2-point, 3-point or 4-point adjustable, and some combinations offer up to 10 distinct stiffness settings. Moving the link to a different hole or blade position changes the effective arm length, so one bar can be set up for the daily commute, a canyon run or a track day. Start in the middle setting, drive the car, then adjust one step at a time until the balance feels right.

Front or rear Toyota 86 sway bar: which should you upgrade?

Choose a rear sway bar first if your Toyota 86 pushes wide in corners, and a front sway bar if the body leans heavily on turn in or the rear steps out too easily. For the most balanced result, fit one of our front and rear sway bar kits, which we match as a pair for each vehicle.

Most front wheel drive and all wheel drive cars, from the Honda Civic to the Subaru WRX, respond best to a stiffer rear bar because they understeer from the factory. Rear wheel drive platforms such as the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet SS often gain the most from a stiffer front sway bar paired with a matched rear bar, which is why we offer them as kits.

What parts work alongside your Toyota 86 sway bar upgrade?

A stiffer bar sends more load through the parts that attach it to the car, so it pays to check them while you?re under there.

Worn factory links are the most common source of clunks, and a lowered car can leave the bar preloaded before you even turn the wheel. Our adjustable sway bar links fix both problems and suit factory and aftermarket bars alike.

Tired rubber mounts let the bar move before it starts working. Fresh sway bar bushings hold it firmly so you feel the upgrade from the first corner, while sway bar lateral locks stop the bar sliding sideways in its mounts and protect those bushings from uneven wear.

If you?re planning a bigger handling build, our Grip Series performance suspension kits include adjustable front and rear sway bars alongside other matched components. Many owners also pair a bar with lowering springs and a strut brace for a sharper, more connected chassis.

How do you know your Toyota 86 sway bar is worn or broken?

Clunking or knocking over bumps, extra body lean in corners, a vague or wandering feel at highway speed and rattles from under the car are the usual warning signs. In most cases the bar itself is fine and the noise comes from worn links or bushings, which cost far less to replace than the bar.

A broken bar or link won?t stop you driving, but it removes roll control on that axle. The car leans further and can feel unstable in a sudden lane change, so get it sorted soon rather than living with it for months.

How much does a sway bar for your Toyota 86 cost?

Our 22mm rear sway bar (BHR101), for example, is $349.88, and complete front and rear kits cost more depending on your vehicle and bar sizes. Labor stays modest because most bars bolt straight on with hand tools and don?t need a wheel alignment afterward. Dollar for dollar, a sway bar upgrade is one of the most effective handling improvements you can make.

How hard is it to install a sway bar on your Toyota 86?

Most of our bars are a home garage job. The BHR101 rear bar is rated at about two hours, needs no wheel alignment and arrives as a complete kit with the bar, bushings, spacers, bolts, nuts and washers. Tighten the link and mount bolts with the car at ride height, on its wheels or on ramps, so the bushings aren?t twisted when the suspension settles. Every bar comes with clear fitting instructions, and bars that are in stock ship within 24 hours.

Will a Whiteline sway bar fit my Toyota 86?

Finish the job with a sway bar bracket or a sway bar support brace to stiffen the mount.
