Replace worn body-to-chassis mounting points with Whiteline body mount bushes. Designed for selected body-on-frame 4WDs, utes and classic vehicles, these bushes support the connection between the body or cab and the chassis while allowing the isolation required at each mounting point.
Depending on the application, body mounts may be positioned throughout the vehicle or used at specific locations such as the front of the cab, radiator support, bumper mounting area or rear chassis-to-cabin connection. Choosing the correct body mount kit starts with identifying which mounting points need attention and checking the required vehicle fitment.
What Do Body Mount Bushes Do?
Body mount bushes sit between the body or cab and the chassis on vehicles that use separate body and chassis structures. They form part of the mounting system that locates the body while providing compliance between the two structures.
These bushes shouldn't be confused with suspension bushes, engine mounts or gearbox mounts. Although all of these components use compliant mounting materials to control movement, they operate in different parts of the vehicle and perform different jobs.
Body mounts can deteriorate with age and use. Whiteline positions its replacement body mount bushes as an alternative to worn factory mounts, providing replacement mounting components for compatible applications.
On 4WDs and utes, the same type of component is also commonly referred to as a cab mount or cab mount bush, particularly when the mounting point supports the cab on a separate chassis.
What Are the Signs of Worn Body Mount Bushes?
Worn body mount bushes can potentially contribute to unwanted movement or noise between the body and chassis, but symptoms shouldn't be used to diagnose a failed mount on their own.
Depending on the vehicle and the condition of the mounts, possible signs can include:
- Clunks or knocks from body-to-chassis mounting areas
- Increased movement between the cab or body and chassis
- Rattles that appear to come from body mounting points
- Visible deterioration, cracking or deformation of a mount
- Changes in the position or alignment of body panels around severely deteriorated mounting points
- Changes in vibration transmitted through the body
These symptoms aren't exclusive to body mounts. Suspension bushes, engine and gearbox mounts, exhaust components, loose fasteners and other chassis components can create similar noises or vibration.
If you're experiencing clunks, movement or unexplained vibration, inspect the complete vehicle rather than replacing body mounts based on symptoms alone. A qualified technician can determine whether the mounts are actually worn and identify any other components requiring attention.
Which Body Mount Kit Do You Need?
Body mount layouts vary considerably between vehicles. Some applications require a complete set of mounts, while others use replacement components for particular positions.
Full Body Mount Kits
A full body mount kit replaces multiple mounting points between the body and chassis. This approach is relevant where several original mounts have deteriorated or where the application uses a matched set across the vehicle.
The number, shape and position of the mounts are specific to the vehicle, so a full kit should always be selected through confirmed fitment rather than by appearance alone.
Cab Mount Bushes
On body-on-frame 4WDs and utes, body mounts are often referred to as cab mounts. Whiteline uses application-specific mounting solutions for selected cab positions, including front cab mounting points.
These components locate the cab relative to the chassis and should be selected for the correct mounting position.
Bumper and Radiator Support Mounts
Not every mounting bush supports the main cabin structure. Some applications use separate bushes around areas such as the bumper or radiator support panel.
These smaller mounting points shouldn't automatically be treated as interchangeable with the main body or cab mounts. Their dimensions and mounting requirements can differ according to their location and vehicle design.
Chassis-to-Cabin Mounts
Some classic applications use dedicated mounting components at specific chassis-to-cabin positions. Where only one section of the mounting system is being serviced, confirm that the replacement kit corresponds with the required position before installation.
Universal Body Mount Bushes
For custom applications where a vehicle-specific kit isn't appropriate, Universal Body Mount Bushes provide another route to fitment.
Universal bushes need to be selected by dimensions rather than vehicle name. Measurements such as outside diameter, inside diameter and overall length become important when determining whether a universal component suits the intended mounting arrangement.
Use the dedicated Universal Body Mount Bushes category for dimension-based selection rather than treating the universal kit as a substitute for an application-specific body mount kit.
What Changes When You Replace Rubber Body Mounts?
Factory body mounts are commonly designed with compliance to help isolate the body from movement and vibration generated through the chassis. Changing the characteristics of the mounting bush can therefore change how movement and vibration are transferred between the two structures.
A replacement body mount with less compliance can provide a firmer connection between the body and chassis. For an enthusiast, that may be desirable where the priority is replacing deteriorated mounts and reducing excessive movement at the mounting points.
There is a trade-off to consider. A firmer mounting material can potentially transmit more noise, vibration or harshness into the body than a softer factory-style rubber mount. The amount of difference depends on the vehicle, the original mount design and the replacement bush.
For that reason, claims that replacement body mounts automatically reduce cabin noise or vibration should be treated cautiously. Their primary job is to replace the relevant mounting components and correctly support the body-to-chassis connection, not to act as a cabin refinement upgrade. Material should also be checked at product level.
How Hard Are Body Mount Bushes to Replace?
Replacing body mount bushes can be significantly more involved than replacing a small suspension bush because the body or cab may need to be safely supported and separated sufficiently from the chassis to access the mounting components.
The exact procedure varies by vehicle and mounting position. Full body mount replacement can involve supporting sections of the body, removing or loosening mounting hardware and carefully creating enough clearance to remove the original mounts.
Older vehicles can add another layer of difficulty. Corroded or seized mounting bolts, deteriorated hardware and restricted access can turn what appears to be a straightforward bush replacement into a more involved repair.
Some Whiteline body mount applications are listed with installation times of several hours, reinforcing that these aren't necessarily quick driveway replacements. Actual fitting time will vary with the vehicle, condition of the existing hardware and the number of mounts being replaced.
Correct support of the body and chassis is essential. If you're not equipped to safely support and work around the body-to-chassis mounting system, have the bushes fitted by a suspension specialist or qualified technician.
After installation, all mounting hardware should be tightened according to the appropriate fitting instructions and vehicle specifications.
