Strut mounts connect the upper end of a suspension strut to the vehicle body, providing a secure mounting point while helping manage movement, vibration and suspension loads. Also known as strut top mounts or upper strut mounts, their exact design and function depend on the suspension system and position on the vehicle.
Some mounts are designed primarily for replacement and suspension servicing, while other designs can reposition the top of the strut to alter suspension geometry. Bushings and bearings within the mounting arrangement may also be serviceable components. Correct fitment matters because the mount forms an important connection between the strut assembly and vehicle structure.
What Are Strut Mounts?
Strut mounts are the components that connect the top of a strut assembly to the vehicle body or chassis. They locate the upper end of the strut while often using compliant material to help isolate vibration and road impacts from the body.
On many front strut suspension systems, the mount also incorporates a bearing that allows the strut assembly to rotate as the wheels steer.
Because the upper mounting point influences the position of the strut, it can also form an important part of the suspension geometry.
The exact construction varies between vehicles, so the mount, bearing and associated bushings should be considered according to the specific suspension design.
Strut Top Mounts vs Upper Strut Mounts
Strut top mount, upper strut mount and strut mount are commonly used to describe the same general component: the mounting point at the top of the strut assembly.
Terminology varies between manufacturers and suspension designs.
The important distinction is not the wording but the component's function and fitment. A replacement must match the strut assembly, body mounting arrangement and any bearing or bushing requirements of that suspension system.
What Do Strut Mounts Do?
Strut mounts locate the upper end of the strut and transfer suspension loads into the vehicle structure while helping isolate unwanted vibration. On applicable front suspension systems, they can also provide the pivot required for the strut to rotate during steering.
Depending on the design, a strut mount may:
Secure the strut to the body
Help isolate road noise and vibration
Allow steering rotation through a bearing
Establish the upper strut position
Influence suspension geometry
Accommodate controlled movement within the mounting assembly
Because these functions are closely connected, wear in a mount or bearing can affect more than just noise.
How Many Strut Mounts Does a Car Have?
There is generally one upper mount for each strut assembly, but the total number depends on the vehicle's suspension design.
A vehicle with front struts will commonly have one mount on each side of the front suspension. If strut-type assemblies are also used at the rear, there may be rear upper mounts as well.
Vehicles using separate springs and shock absorbers may use different mounting arrangements, so there is no universal number that applies to every car.
What Are the Signs of Bad Strut Mounts?
Worn or damaged strut mounts can contribute to knocking, clunking, vibration or steering-related noise, but these symptoms do not confirm that the mount itself has failed. Other suspension and steering components can produce very similar behaviour.
Signs worth investigating include:
Knocking or clunking over bumps
Creaking or grinding during steering
Binding or roughness as the steering turns
Increased vibration through the body
Visible cracking or separation in compliant mounting material
Excessive movement around the upper strut mounting point
Changes in wheel alignment or uneven tyre wear
Clunks, Creaks and Vibration
A damaged mount can allow movement between the strut assembly and body that would not normally occur.
On a front strut with an upper bearing, wear or damage can also affect how smoothly the assembly rotates during steering. This may produce creaking, binding or other noise as the steering wheel is turned.
Noise alone is not enough to identify the failed component.
A qualified technician should inspect the complete suspension before parts are replaced based only on a noise or change in steering feel.
How Do You Check Strut Mounts?
Checking strut mounts involves inspecting the mount, bearing and surrounding components for deterioration, excessive movement or abnormal noise. Some checks can be made with the suspension assembled, while a complete assessment may require further disassembly.
A technician may look for:
Cracks, tearing or separation in compliant material
Corrosion or physical damage
Excessive movement at the upper mount
Noise while the steering is operated
Roughness or binding from an upper bearing
Loose or damaged mounting hardware
The spring, strut and surrounding suspension components should be inspected at the same time because faults elsewhere can produce similar symptoms.
How Long Do Strut Mounts Last?
Strut mounts do not have one fixed replacement interval. Their service life depends on road conditions, vehicle load, suspension design, component construction, environmental exposure and how the vehicle is used.
Regular inspection is more useful than assuming replacement is required at a particular distance.
The mounts are also worth inspecting whenever struts or springs are being replaced. Because strut mount replacement can require much of the same disassembly, servicing a worn mount at the same time can avoid repeating the job later.
Replacement should still be based on condition and the applicable service requirements rather than age alone.
Types of Strut Mounts
Strut mounts can use different designs depending on whether the priority is standard suspension location, component servicing or geometry adjustment. The correct type must suit the suspension system and intended function.
Mount construction, bushings, bearings and adjustment features can all vary by application.
Front Strut Mounts
Front strut mounts locate the upper end of the front strut assembly.
Where the strut rotates with the steering, the mounting arrangement may incorporate a bearing to allow that movement. The bearing and mount can be integrated or serviced as separate components depending on the design.
When replacing a front strut mount, confirm whether the bearing, bushings or associated hardware also require inspection or replacement.
Strut Mount Bushing Kits
Bushings within a strut mounting arrangement provide controlled compliance between connected components.
Their job can include accommodating movement and reducing the transfer of unwanted vibration through the mounting point.
Bush dimensions and functions vary, so a strut mount bushing kit should be selected for its specific suspension application rather than treated as a universal replacement.
What Are Adjustable or Offset Strut Top Mounts?
Adjustable or offset strut top mounts change the upper position of the strut to alter suspension geometry where the suspension design allows it. They serve a different purpose from a standard replacement mount because the mounting position itself is used to create a geometry change.
Depending on the design, an offset mount may reposition the top of the strut by a predetermined amount, while other adjustable designs can provide a broader range of positioning.
The amount and direction of correction are application-specific.
Caster and Camber Adjustment
Moving the upper strut position can alter caster, camber or both, depending on the suspension geometry and direction of the offset.
Camber describes the inward or outward tilt of the wheel when viewed from the front. Caster describes the fore-aft inclination of the steering axis when viewed from the side.
Changing either can affect tyre contact, steering behaviour and wheel alignment.
Whiteline offset strut mount designs can provide specified caster and camber changes on applicable vehicles, but the correction should always be confirmed for the particular application rather than assumed from another mount.
A professional wheel alignment is required after installation so the resulting geometry can be measured and set correctly.
How Are Strut Mounts Replaced?
Strut mount replacement commonly requires removal of the strut assembly and, where a coil spring surrounds the strut, controlled compression of the spring before the upper mount can be removed. The exact procedure varies with suspension design.
This is not a job where spring tension should be treated casually.
What the Job Involves
A typical replacement may involve:
Safely raising and supporting the vehicle
Removing the wheel
Disconnecting the strut assembly as required
Removing the strut from the vehicle
Compressing the coil spring with suitable equipment
Removing the upper mount
Inspecting the mount, bearing, spring and surrounding components
Installing the replacement components
Reassembling and refitting the strut
Tightening all fasteners to the manufacturer's specifications
Checking suspension operation after installation
Completing a wheel alignment where required
The applicable workshop procedure should always take priority over a generic sequence.
Spring Safety and Wheel Alignment
Coil springs store substantial energy. Incorrectly releasing a loaded spring can cause serious injury.
Use a suitable spring compressor designed for the spring and strut assembly. Never dismantle a loaded strut without correctly controlling the spring, and never work underneath a vehicle supported only by a jack.
If you do not have suitable equipment and experience, have the strut mount replaced by a qualified technician.
A professional wheel alignment should be completed after fitting offset or adjustable mounts and whenever the replacement procedure has disturbed suspension geometry.
