What Shock Absorber Bushes Do

Shock Absorber Mount Types

Stud-Mount Shocks

Stud-mount (or pin-top) shocks have a threaded stud at one end that passes through a hole in the body or mount. Bushes sit above and below the mount, clamping it between them, and are held in place by cup washers and a nut. These bushes are usually stepped, with a smaller spigot that locates in the mount hole.

Eye-Mount Shocks

Eye-mount shocks have a round eye at one or both ends. A bush, usually in two halves, fits inside the eye with an inner sleeve, and a bolt passes through to the mounting bracket. These bushes control the shock?s pivoting movement as the suspension travels.

Bar-Pin and Other Mounts

Some shocks use a bar-pin, a flat bar with holes at each end, or other specialised mounting styles. Check the mount type on your shock before choosing bushes, as each style needs a different bush design.

Polyurethane vs Rubber Shock Bushes

Rubber shock bushes are soft and quiet when new, but they deflect under load and break down with heat, oil and weather. Once worn, they let the shock move before it starts damping, reducing control and causing noise.

How to Measure and Choose Universal Shock Bushes

Universal shock absorber bushes are listed by type and dimensions. Measure carefully before ordering:

• Mount type: stud-mount, eye-mount or another style
• Inside diameter (ID): the diameter of the shock stud, or of the bolt or sleeve through the eye
• Outside diameter (OD): the diameter of the mount hole or eye. Stepped bushes list two diameters: the outer body and the locating spigot.
• Length (L): the bush height or eye width

Measure the shock stud, mount hole or eye directly rather than a worn bush, as compressed rubber gives misleading figures. Each listing shows the bush type and dimensions, so you can match them to your measurements.

Replacing Shock Absorber Bushes

Shock bushes can be replaced by a workshop or an experienced home mechanic. As a general guide:

• Support the vehicle securely, with the suspension at a height that takes load off the shock where needed.
• Remove the shock or its mounting nut and bolt, and take out the old bushes, sleeves and washers.
• Clean the mount and inspect the stud, eye and washers for wear or damage. Replace any damaged cup washers.
• For stud mounts, fit the lower bush, the mount, the upper bush, the cup washer and the nut in the correct order. Tighten until the bushes are firmly clamped without being over-compressed, following the shock or vehicle manufacturer?s guidance.
• For eye mounts, press the bush halves into the eye, fit the sleeve, and tighten the bolt to specification with the suspension at normal ride height.
• Lubricate polyurethane bushes with a suitable grease where they pivot on a sleeve.

Replace bushes in pairs, or on all four shocks, for consistent ride and handling.
