Vertical links are suspension arms used in certain independent rear suspension designs to connect and locate components around the rear knuckle and lower suspension assembly. Despite the name, a rear vertical link is not the same component as a sway bar link.
The vertical link forms part of the wheel-locating suspension structure, transferring loads while helping control the relationship between the knuckle and other suspension links. Its construction and bushings can influence how much movement occurs at these mounting points. Because vertical-link layouts are suspension-specific, correct fitment must be confirmed for the particular vehicle and rear suspension design.
What Is a Vertical Stablilizer Link?
A vertical link is an upright suspension arm used in some independent rear suspension systems to connect the rear knuckle with another suspension member, such as a lower control arm. It forms part of the structure that locates the wheel as the suspension moves.
Unlike a conventional fore-aft trailing arm, the vertical link is positioned more upright within the suspension assembly.
Its exact role depends on the geometry of the system, but it can transfer suspension loads and help control the position of the rear knuckle relative to the surrounding arms.
The term should therefore be understood according to the suspension design rather than treated as a universal name for any upright link.
Is a Vertical Link the Same as a Sway Bar Link?
No. A vertical link and a sway bar link are different suspension components with different functions. Their names can create confusion because a sway bar is also called a stabiliser bar, making ?stabiliser link? a common name for a sway bar link.
A sway bar link connects the sway bar to the suspension, transferring force into the bar as the suspension moves and the vehicle rolls.
A vertical link arm is part of the wheel-locating suspension structure. It connects suspension components around the knuckle and control-arm assembly.
The two components should not be treated as interchangeable even if both appear as relatively short suspension links.
What Does a Vertical Link Do?
A vertical link transfers loads between connected rear suspension components while helping locate the knuckle as the wheel moves through its suspension travel. Its mounting points and bushings allow the suspension to articulate while controlling movement in the directions intended by the suspension geometry.
A vertical link can contribute to:
- Locating the rear knuckle
- Transferring suspension loads
- Controlling unwanted movement between mounting points
- Maintaining the intended relationship between suspension arms
- Supporting consistent rear suspension geometry through movement
It works as part of a complete multi-link suspension system rather than controlling rear wheel geometry by itself.
The condition of its bushes and mounting points can therefore affect how accurately the suspension follows its intended movement.
Why Fit Aftermarket Vertical Links?
Aftermarket vertical links can change the stiffness and compliance of the connection between rear suspension components. A design with a stiffer arm or lower-compliance bushings can reduce movement at those mounting points compared with a more compliant arrangement.
Reducing unwanted compliance can help the suspension follow its intended geometry more closely under load. However, firmer components can also change how road inputs are transmitted through the suspension.
That trade-off matters.
An aftermarket vertical link should therefore be considered as part of the overall rear suspension setup rather than assumed to improve every aspect of ride and handling.
Bushing Stiffness and Road Feel
Bushings provide controlled compliance between suspension components.
A softer bushing can provide greater isolation from vibration and road inputs, while a lower-compliance bushing can reduce movement at the mounting point.
Applicable vertical link designs use minimal-flex, grease-free polymer bushings to control unwanted movement. The exact bushing specification should be confirmed for the individual application rather than assumed across every vertical-link design.
Increasing mounting stiffness can also transmit more vibration or road texture into the vehicle. This is a normal consideration when balancing suspension precision against isolation.
What Are Whiteline Vertical Links Made From?
Construction depends on the individual vertical link design and should be confirmed for the specific application. Whiteline specifies forged 6061-T6 aluminium on applicable vertical links, together with an I-beam-style structure and CNC-machined features.
This construction is intended to provide a stiff structural connection while keeping the component suited to its suspension role.
Applicable designs may also use low-flex polymer bushings at their mounting points.
These specifications should not be treated as universal features of every vertical link. Check the individual component information for its construction, bushing type and installation requirements.
What Are the Signs of Worn Vertical Link Bushes?
Worn vertical link bushes can allow unwanted movement at the link's mounting points, potentially contributing to rear suspension noise or changes in how accurately the wheel is located. These symptoms are not unique to vertical links, so inspection is important before replacing parts.
Signs worth investigating include:
- Clunking or knocking from the rear suspension
- Visible cracking, tearing or deterioration around a bushing
- Excessive movement at a vertical-link mounting point
- Changes in rear suspension behaviour
- Changes in wheel alignment
- Uneven tyre wear where suspension geometry has been affected
Physical damage to the arm itself should also be inspected rather than assuming the bush is the only component requiring attention.
Other Causes to Rule Out
Similar rear suspension symptoms can result from:
- Worn control arm bushes
- Trailing arm bush wear
- Worn shock absorbers or mounts
- Wheel bearing problems
- Sway bar link or bush wear
- Loose suspension hardware
- Other damaged suspension links
- Tyre or wheel problems
A clunk or change in rear-end behaviour should not be diagnosed as a vertical-link fault from the symptom alone. Have the complete suspension inspected where the cause is unclear.
How Are Vertical Links Fitted?
Vertical link installation generally involves safely supporting the vehicle and relevant rear suspension components, removing the existing link and fitting the replacement between its specified mounting points. Correct installation is important because the link forms part of the suspension locating structure.
The exact procedure depends on the vehicle and suspension design.
A typical installation may involve:
- Safely raising and supporting the vehicle
- Supporting the relevant suspension components
- Removing the existing mounting hardware
- Removing the original vertical link
- Inspecting the mounting points and surrounding components
- Installing the replacement in the correct orientation
- Checking suspension and wheel clearances
- Tightening fasteners according to the specified procedure
Where compliant bushes are used, follow the applicable procedure for final tightening. Some bushing designs should be tightened with the suspension at normal ride height to avoid unintended preload.
Safety and Wheel Alignment
Never work underneath a vehicle supported only by a jack. Use suitable stands or workshop lifting equipment and ensure suspension components remain safely controlled while the link is disconnected.
Do not assume that replacing one side at a time is the correct procedure for every suspension design. Follow the applicable workshop instructions and use the manufacturer's specified fastener torques.
Because removing a suspension locating link can affect wheel geometry, have the rear alignment checked after installation where required.
Use a qualified technician if you do not have the equipment or experience required to safely service suspension locating components.
Choosing Rear Vertical Links for Your Vehicle
Choose rear vertical links according to the vehicle's suspension design, mounting arrangement and required component specification.
You'll find these listed as vertical link stabiliser arms, but don't search by "stabiliser link" or physical appearance alone, as this can easily lead to a sway bar link instead. Select your vehicle to confirm the correct rear vertical link.
Whiteline can assist with fitment if you're unsure whether a vertical link is appropriate for your rear suspension setup.

With performance permanently ingrained in mind, these Whiteline high performance, vertical links are designed from high performance 6061-T6 forged aviation grade aluminium. The design is built with a sturdy and robust I beam design, which completely eliminates all the undesirable effects caused by the high compliant rubber bushings and OEM, low cost, pressed steel design linkage. Utilizing a CNC precision machined forging, gives you the peace of mind that the vertical link mounting length has been maintained and the suspension geometry remains consistent and true the way it was intended. Installed with minimal flex polymer, grease free bushings, removes the nasty undesirable effects of rubber bushing oscillations under high loading, maintaining consistent alignment angles during cornering and eliminating wheel hop. The Whiteline vertical link is a must have item for the Mustang if suspension performance is paramount.Rear Vertical Link Stabilizer Arm to Suit Ford Mustang S550 and S650
