Whiteline polyurethane sheets are solid, flat sheets of polyurethane for cutting your own pads, isolators, washers, spacers and wear strips. When a part is no longer available, or a project needs a flat component no kit includes, polyurethane sheet gives you a tough, resilient material to cut to the exact shape and size you need.
Suited to workshops, fabricators, restorers and motorsport builders, polyurethane sheet is a practical material to keep on hand for one-off parts, repairs and prototypes.
What Polyurethane Sheet Is
Polyurethane is a family of materials that ranges from soft foams to rigid boards and tough, flexible elastomers. The terms ?urethane? and ?polyurethane? are generally used to mean the same thing. Strictly speaking, polyurethane is the polymer formed when many urethane groups link together.
Whiteline polyurethane sheet is a solid cast elastomer, sometimes called polyurethane rubber. It isn?t foam or insulation board. It?s dense, firm and flexible, and it?s designed to carry load, absorb vibration and recover its shape after compression. That makes it ideal for mechanical parts that need to cushion or isolate while standing up to wear, oil and weather.
What You Can Make from Polyurethane Sheet
Polyurethane sheet is ideal for flat or layered components, including:
- Pads and isolators for suspension, chassis and body mounts
- Spacers, packers and shims to correct gaps or adjust fitment
- Washers and thrust pads for custom bush assemblies
- Bump stop and rebound pads for custom suspension setups
- Wear strips and rub pads where parts contact the body or chassis
- Anti-vibration mounts for radiators, batteries, exhausts and accessories
- Gaskets and seals for non-critical mechanical applications
Because you cut each part yourself, you can produce exactly the shape you need, whether it?s a single replacement or a short run of matching parts.
Choosing the Right Polyurethane Sheet
Thickness
Each listing shows the sheet?s length, width and thickness. Thinner sheet is easier to cut by hand and suits shims, washers and wear strips. Thicker sheet suits pads and isolators that need to carry more load or absorb more movement.
For thicker components, you can also stack layers of sheet to build up height.
Shore Hardness
Elastomer hardness is measured on the Shore scale, and each sheet?s rating is shown on its listing. A lower Shore A number is softer and better at absorbing vibration. A higher number is firmer and resists compression, which suits parts that need to locate components precisely.
For most automotive pads, spacers and isolators, a firm but flexible polyurethane gives the best balance of support and vibration control.
Polyurethane vs Rubber Sheet
Rubber sheet is inexpensive and soft, but it compresses permanently over time and breaks down with heat, oil and sunlight. Polyurethane sheet is more resistant to abrasion, tearing, compression set, oil and weathering. Parts cut from it hold their shape and thickness far longer.
Polyurethane also carries more load for a given thickness. That means a polyurethane pad can often be thinner than the rubber part it replaces, while still giving the same or better support.
Cutting and Shaping Polyurethane Sheet
Polyurethane sheet can be shaped with common workshop tools. As a general guide:
- Marking out: use a template or scribe for accurate shapes, especially when making several matching parts.
- Straight cuts: use a sharp utility knife against a steel straightedge, taking several passes rather than forcing one deep cut. A little water on the blade reduces drag.
- Curves and thicker sheet: use a band saw or jigsaw with a fine-toothed blade, supporting the sheet close to the cut.
- Holes: use a sharp hole punch or a hollow punch for washers and bolt holes, or drill slowly with a sharp bit and a backing board underneath.
- Precision parts: for complex shapes or larger production runs, water-jet or die cutting gives the cleanest, most consistent results.
Make a test cut on an offcut first to confirm your method before cutting the final part.
Tips for Better Custom Parts
- Allow for compression. Under load, polyurethane compresses slightly. Allow for this when setting spacer and pad thickness.
- Avoid sharp internal corners. Small radii at internal corners reduce the chance of tears starting under load.
- Support pads evenly. A pad that sits fully on a flat surface lasts longer than one that overhangs an edge or bridges a gap.
- Lubricate moving contact points. Where a polyurethane part slides or pivots against metal, use a grease suitable for polyurethane to prevent squeaking.
- Bond correctly if needed. If gluing a part in place, use an adhesive suited to polyurethane, and clean and lightly abrade both surfaces first.
This sheet is intended for automotive and general fabrication. For food-contact, medical or other regulated applications, use a material certified for that specific purpose.
Who Polyurethane Sheets Suit
Polyurethane sheets suit workshops and fabricators producing custom pads, spacers and isolators, and restorers of classic and rare vehicles where original rubber parts are no longer available. Motorsport teams use them for prototype and one-off components, and home builders use them for practical, hard-wearing fixes and upgrades around the vehicle and workshop.
