Give your handbrake cable the movement it needs after lifting your 4WD with Whiteline handbrake cable extension kits. Designed for selected lifted applications, these kits reposition the factory cable mounting arrangement to help prevent the handbrake cable from being stretched beyond its available movement as the suspension travels.
A suspension lift affects more than springs and shock absorbers. Brake hoses, ABS wiring and handbrake cables can also have limits to how far they can move. Whiteline handbrake cable extensions address this issue with application-specific mounting hardware designed around the original cable arrangement.
What Does a Handbrake Cable Extension Kit Do?
A handbrake cable extension kit changes the position of the factory handbrake cable mounting arrangement after suspension height has been increased.
Whiteline notes that lifting some vehicles can create limitations in the available movement of components such as brake lines, ABS leads and handbrake cables. If a cable is pulled beyond its available movement as the suspension travels, it can potentially be stretched to the point of damage.
Rather than replacing the complete handbrake cable, these extension kits reposition its mounting arrangement on compatible vehicles. This gives the original cable additional room to accommodate the changed suspension setup.
These parts shouldn't be confused with replacement handbrake cables, hydraulic handbrakes, drift handbrakes or electronic park brake components. They are specifically designed to address cable positioning on selected lifted 4WD applications.
Why Can a Lift Stretch Your Handbrake Cable?
Increasing suspension height changes the relationship between the chassis, axle and suspension components. It can also change how far certain cables need to move as the suspension extends.
A handbrake cable that has sufficient movement at standard ride height may have less available movement after a suspension lift. This can become particularly important as the rear suspension extends away from normal ride height.
Whiteline specifically identifies handbrake cable movement as one of the considerations that may need to be addressed when lifting certain vehicles. Its extension hardware changes the relevant mounting position to provide additional movement for the compatible lifted setup.
The requirement isn't universal to every 4WD or every suspension lift. Cable routing, suspension design and available travel vary between applications, which is why the correct extension kit should be selected according to vehicle fitment rather than treated as a universal solution.
Differential-Mounted or Leaf Spring-Mounted Extension
Whiteline uses two different mounting arrangements for its rear handbrake cable extensions. Although both perform the same broad role, they attach at different points and use different hardware.
Differential-Mounted Handbrake Cable Bracket
One configuration uses brackets mounted around the differential arrangement. The kit uses brackets, bolts, washers and nuts to reposition the relevant handbrake cable mounting points.
This design is application-specific and should only be used where Whiteline specifies the differential-mounted configuration.
Leaf Spring-Mounted Handbrake Cable Extension
The second configuration relocates the handbrake cable mounting arrangement at the leaf spring.
Whiteline's fitting documentation describes this setup as handbrake cable extension spacers. The supplied hardware uses bolts, tubes or spacers and washers to move the original mounting position.
The two configurations aren't interchangeable simply because both are handbrake cable extension kits. Use Whiteline's vehicle search to determine which mounting arrangement is specified for your vehicle.
How Do You Check a Handbrake Cable After a Lift?
Checking the handbrake cable after increasing suspension height should include both its physical routing and the operation of the parking brake.
Start by inspecting the cable for obvious signs of excessive tension, twisting, rubbing or contact with surrounding components. Pay particular attention to mounting points and areas where movement between the axle, suspension and body can change the cable's position.
Checking the cable only while the vehicle is sitting at normal ride height may not show how its routing changes as the suspension moves.
Where appropriate and safe workshop procedures are available, the cable routing should be assessed through the relevant suspension movement to make sure it isn't being pulled tight or placed in a position where it could be damaged.
The handbrake itself should also operate correctly and hold the stationary vehicle as intended. If its operation has changed following suspension work, don't assume that installing an extension bracket alone will correct the issue.
A handbrake that doesn't hold the vehicle securely is a safety concern and should be inspected by a qualified technician.
Does the Handbrake Need Adjusting After Fitting?
Handbrake operation should be checked after fitting an extension kit, but that doesn't mean every installation automatically requires cable adjustment.
The extension hardware changes the cable's mounting arrangement rather than replacing the complete handbrake system. Whether further adjustment is necessary depends on the vehicle, cable condition, existing adjustment and the effect of the suspension modification.
After installation, confirm that the cable is routed correctly, has appropriate movement and that the handbrake operates as intended. If adjustment is required, it should be carried out according to the vehicle manufacturer's procedure and specifications.
Whiteline's fitting documentation recommends that installation be carried out by a licensed workshop or tradesperson and used alongside the appropriate workshop manual and safety procedures.
This is particularly important because the handbrake is a safety-critical system. If you're uncertain about cable routing, adjustment or parking-brake operation, have the vehicle inspected by a qualified technician.
Other Components to Check After a 4WD Lift
A handbrake cable is only one component that may be affected when suspension height and travel change. The complete setup should be considered when lifting a 4WD.
Brake Line Kits can address factory brake hose mounting where additional movement is required after lifting. ABS Components perform a similar role for ABS wiring where the original routing may become restricted.
On vehicles equipped with a height sensing rear brake proportioning system, Brake Valve Linkage components may also be required to account for the changed suspension height and allow the rear brake bias to be correctly adjusted.
These parts perform separate jobs. A handbrake cable extension doesn't provide additional movement for a hydraulic brake hose or ABS lead, and it doesn't correct a brake proportioning valve.
