What Leaf Spring Bushes Do

A leaf spring connects to the chassis or trailer frame at each end, through a fixed hanger at one end and a swinging shackle at the other. Bushes sit inside the spring eyes and shackles, forming the pivot points that let the spring flex and lengthen as the suspension moves.

Healthy bushes keep the spring and axle located precisely, absorb vibration, and allow smooth movement over bumps. When they wear, the spring can move sideways and fore-aft, the axle can shift out of alignment, and the suspension becomes noisy and unstable, especially under load or when towing.

Eye-to-eye springs have a rolled eye at each end. One eye mounts to a fixed hanger and the other to a shackle. Each eye contains a bush, and the shackle may also use bushes, depending on the design. Eye-to-eye springs are among the most common setups on trailers and vehicles.

Eye and Slipper Springs

Eye and slipper springs have an eye at one end and a flat slipper end at the other, which slides against a hanger or roller. Only the eye end uses a bush, so the bush there does all the locating work and should be kept in good condition.

Rocker Roller and Multi-Axle Suspension

Tandem and multi-axle trailers often use a rocker between the springs to share load between axles. Rockers pivot on bushes too, and these wear in the same way as spring eye bushes. Renew them whenever the spring bushes are replaced.

Polyurethane vs Nylon and Rubber Spring Bushes

Nylon bushes are common on trailers. They?re inexpensive and hard-wearing, but they?re rigid, so they transmit more vibration and can crack. Worn nylon bushes also allow the bolt to rattle in the eye.

Rubber bushes are common in vehicles. They?re soft and quiet when new, but they compress, perish and break down with load, heat, oil and weather.

Polyurethane bushes offer a balance of strength and compliance. They have outstanding abrasion resistance and high load-bearing capability, with resistance to oil, grease, ozone and weathering. They hold the spring firmly while absorbing vibration, and they last far longer than rubber in harsh conditions. That makes them well suited to heavily loaded trailers, towing and off-road use.

How to Measure Leaf Spring Bushes

Universal bushes are specified by their dimensions, so careful measuring ensures the correct fit:

• Outside diameter (OD): measure the inside of the spring eye or shackle housing the bush fits into.
• Inside diameter (ID): measure the diameter of the shackle bolt or pin, or the steel sleeve if one is used.
• Length (L): measure the width of the spring eye, or the length of the existing bush, so the new bush fills the eye correctly.
• Flanges: note whether the existing bush is flanged or straight.

Measure an undamaged part where possible, as worn bushes and bolts give misleading figures. Each listing shows the bush dimensions, so you can match them to your measurements.

Lubrication and Shackle Bolts

Polyurethane bushes pivot on their bolt or sleeve rather than twisting internally, so the contact surfaces should be lubricated with a grease suitable for polyurethane at installation. Correct lubrication prevents squeaks and keeps the bush moving freely.

Some setups use greasable shackle bolts or pins, with a grease nipple that lets you re-lubricate the joint without dismantling it. Whether greasable bolts are appropriate depends on the bush and sleeve design, so follow the instructions supplied with your bushes.

Bolts should be a snug fit in the bush or sleeve, not loose. Inspect shackle bolts for wear whenever the bushes are replaced, and replace any that are worn, stepped or bent.

Signs of Worn Spring Bushes

• Clunking or knocking from the springs over bumps or when braking and accelerating
• The trailer or vehicle tracking off-centre, or tyres wearing unevenly
• Visible movement, gaps or cracking at the spring eyes or shackles
• Elongated or worn shackle bolts
• Squeaking or creaking from the spring ends

Check spring bushes as part of every pre-trip inspection, especially before long tows or off-road trips.

Installation Tips

• Support the vehicle or trailer safely and take the load off the springs before removing the bolts.
• Remove the old bushes completely, and clean the spring eyes and shackles.
• Lubricate the bushes as directed, then press or push them into the eyes, using a vice or press where needed.
• Fit new or undamaged bolts, and tighten them to specification with the suspension at normal ride height. This prevents the bushes being preloaded.
• Recheck bolt tightness after the first trip.
