Improve steering response, control unwanted movement and correct application-specific steering geometry with Whiteline steering parts for your VM LEVORG. From steering rack mount bushes and bump steer correction components to idler arms, steering coupling bushes and other steering hardware, these parts address different areas between driver input, the steering system and the wheels.
The right steering upgrade depends on your VM LEVORG and the problem being addressed. Firmer steering rack bushes can reduce unwanted rack movement, while geometry correction components can address bump steer on selected applications. Older steering systems may instead require attention around idler arms, drag links or coupling bushes. Because steering is safety-critical, correct diagnosis, fitment and alignment are essential.
VM LEVORG Steering Parts and Steering Response
Your VM LEVORG 's steering system transfers driver input from the steering wheel through a series of mechanical components before that input reaches the road wheels. The exact arrangement varies between vehicles, but accurate steering depends on these components moving as intended without excessive play or unwanted movement at their mounting points.
Performance steering parts can address specific sources of compliance or geometry changes rather than simply making the steering feel heavier. Depending on the application, this can involve controlling movement at the steering rack, changing steering geometry to manage bump steer, or replacing bushes and linkage components that have deteriorated.
Steering upgrades should therefore be selected according to your VM LEVORG's steering design, suspension geometry and intended use rather than treating every component as a universal way to create sharper handling.
VM LEVORG Steering Rack Mount Bush Upgrades
The steering rack needs to remain securely located as steering forces pass through it. Bushes at its mounting points provide support and isolation, but excessive compliance or deterioration can allow unwanted movement between the rack and the chassis.
Whiteline identifies steering rack movement as a source of reduced steering response on compatible applications. Replacing compliant or worn mounting bushes with firmer application-specific bushes can reduce that movement and create a more direct relationship between steering input and rack movement.
Whiteline also notes that steering racks can experience substantial loads from factors including power steering assistance, aggressive alignment settings, wider wheels and lower-profile tyres. The effect and appropriate solution vary by vehicle, so these factors shouldn't be interpreted as meaning every modified vehicle automatically needs firmer rack bushes.
VM LEVORG Bump Steer and Steering Geometry Correction
Bump steer describes a change in wheel toe as the suspension moves through its travel without a corresponding steering input from the driver. In practical terms, suspension movement can cause the wheel to steer slightly because of the relationship between the steering linkage and suspension geometry.
Some vehicles can experience unwanted bump steer when suspension geometry changes, including after lowering or lifting. However, bump steer isn't limited to modified ride heights, and the amount present depends on the original steering and suspension geometry.
Whiteline uses different approaches to bump steer correction depending on the application. The objective is to change the relationship between the steering linkage and suspension movement so unwanted toe change can be reduced.
Bump Steer Correction Kits
Application-specific bump steer kits can alter steering geometry through components around the steering rack or tie-rod arrangement. Whiteline describes selected correction kits as changing bump steer characteristics to provide a more positive steering feel in performance applications.
The design and correction method vary between vehicles, so a bump steer kit shouldn't be treated as a generic spacer or universal steering modification. Correct application and setup are important because changing steering pickup points affects suspension and steering geometry.
Steering Knuckles for Bump Steer Correction
On selected applications, Whiteline uses a replacement steering knuckle to alter the tie-rod pickup point. Changing this point modifies the relationship between steering linkage movement and suspension travel, allowing bump steer to be reduced across your VM LEVORG's operating ride heights.
This approach is application-specific and shouldn't be generalised to every Whiteline steering knuckle or every vehicle experiencing bump steer. Steering geometry needs to be assessed as a complete system before selecting a correction method.
VM LEVORG Steering Parts for Older Cars and 4WDs
Not every steering system uses a modern rack-and-pinion layout. Older cars and selected 4WDs can use steering arrangements involving idler arms, drag links and other linkage components. Wear or excessive movement within these parts and their bushes can affect how accurately steering input is transferred through the system.
Idler Arms and Idler Arm Bushes
An idler arm supports part of the steering linkage on compatible steering systems, helping maintain its position as steering input moves the linkage from side to side. Its bushes or mounting points need to control movement while allowing the linkage to operate correctly.
Wear in an idler arm or its bushes can contribute to unwanted movement within the steering linkage. The appropriate repair depends on whether the bushes, complete arm or another steering component is responsible for the problem.
Drag Link and Steering Damper Bushes
A drag link forms part of the steering linkage on certain steering systems, transferring movement between steering components. Bushes associated with the linkage need to maintain controlled movement at their mounting points.
A steering damper serves a different purpose, helping control rapid movement or disturbance within compatible steering systems. Bushes at its mounting points should therefore be treated according to their specific application rather than grouped together with steering rack bushes.
Steering Coupling Bushes
A steering coupling bush is used within compatible steering shaft or coupling arrangements to transfer steering input while providing the compliance intended by the original system.
Deterioration or excessive movement within a coupling can affect the connection between steering input and the steering mechanism, but steering play can originate from many other components. The coupling should be inspected as part of the complete steering system before replacement.
HICAS Rear Steering Lock Kits
HICAS is a rear-wheel steering system used on selected performance vehicles. The system adds rear steering input alongside the conventional front steering system.
A HICAS lock kit disables the applicable rear-steer function so the rear wheels no longer receive active steering input. Whiteline's hydraulic HICAS lock kit is designed specifically to disable the hydraulic rear-steer system, creating a fixed rear-steering arrangement.
This is a specialised modification rather than a general repair for vague steering or worn suspension components. Compatibility and the implications of disabling the original rear-steer system should be considered before installation, including any requirements that apply to vehicle modifications where your VM LEVORG is registered and used.
Signs of Worn VM LEVORG Steering Parts
Worn or damaged steering components can produce symptoms such as excessive steering play, vague response, clunks, wandering or changes in how consistently your VM LEVORG tracks. Uneven tyre wear can also occur alongside steering or alignment problems.
These symptoms aren't enough to diagnose a specific component. Similar behaviour can result from wheel alignment, tyres, wheel bearings, ball joints, suspension bushes, control arms or other steering and suspension components. A clunk or vague steering feel therefore doesn't automatically mean the steering rack bushes, tie rods or idler arm bushes need replacing.
Any noticeable change in steering behaviour deserves proper inspection because steering is safety-critical. If your VM LEVORG develops excessive play, unusual movement or unpredictable steering response, have the steering and suspension checked by a qualified technician rather than replacing parts based on symptoms alone.
VM LEVORG Steering Parts Installation and Wheel Alignment
Steering components need to be fitted correctly because they directly influence how steering input reaches the wheels. Installation requirements vary from relatively straightforward bush replacement to work involving steering linkages, rack mounting points or geometry-correction components.
Parts that alter steering geometry require particular care. Tie-rod positions, steering knuckles and bump steer correction components can affect toe and other aspects of the steering and suspension relationship, so correct installation and setup are essential.
A wheel alignment should be carried out after steering work where the replacement or adjustment can affect wheel alignment or steering geometry. This allows relevant alignment settings to be checked after installation rather than assuming they remain unchanged.
Where specialised tools, geometry adjustment or steering-system disassembly is required, use a qualified technician. Whiteline fitting services are also available for compatible components where professional installation is preferred.
