Does the Tesla Model Y have air suspension?
The Tesla Model Y has never been offered with air suspension. It uses coil springs with conventional dampers, and some later Performance versions add adaptive damping. Air suspension on a Tesla is a Model S and Model X feature. If you want to change how a Model Y rides or handles, springs, bars and bushings are the levers available.
What the Model Y actually uses
Coil springs at all four corners, conventional telescopic dampers, independent suspension front and rear. It is a passive system, meaning it has one spring rate and, on most variants, one damper setting, chosen by Tesla and fixed.
Later Model Y Performance variants introduced adaptive damping, which continuously varies damper firmness. That is not air suspension. Adaptive damping changes how fast the suspension moves. Air suspension replaces the steel spring with an air spring and can change ride height and effective spring rate. Different systems solving different problems, and only the higher variants of the Model Y get the former.

Why Tesla left it off the Model Y
Simply, it’s about cost and complexity. Air suspension adds a compressor, an air tank, lines, height sensors and control electronics, all of which cost money to build and represent components that can fail out of warranty. On a high volume vehicle at the Model Y price point, a coil spring is the rational engineering choice.
The consequence is that Tesla had to pick one spring and damper tune and live with it, and it chose a firm one. That firmness serves body control on a tall, heavy vehicle, and it is the reason a large share of Model Y owners describe the ride as harsher than they expected. Tesla has revised the tuning across production, so a later car does not necessarily ride like an early one, but the fundamental architecture has not changed.
Can you retrofit air suspension to a Model Y?
Aftermarket air ride kits for the Model 3 and Model Y do exist. Be clear eyed about what you are taking on.
What you gain. Adjustable ride height, which is genuinely useful if you want a very low stance parked and usable clearance driving.
What you give up. Cost that typically exceeds every other suspension option combined, a compressor and lines added to a car that had neither, more components that can fail, and no gain in handling. An air spring is not inherently better at controlling a heavy body than a well specified steel spring. Most air ride installations are about stance rather than dynamics, and that is a legitimate goal, just not the same goal as making the car handle or ride better.
For the large majority of owners asking this question, the underlying want is either a better ride or a lower stance, and both have far cheaper and more reliable answers.
What to do instead, depending on what you actually want
"I want it to ride better." Start with tire pressure and wheel size, which cost nothing and very little respectively, then address body control and worn components. "I want it to handle better." Performance sway bars. This is the change air suspension would not give you anyway. A Whiteline rear bar for the Model Y runs between 82.1% and 154.2% stiffer than the soft factory part depending on setting, and the 30mm front bar spans 10.3% to 44.0% stiffer. "I want it lower." A lowering spring, which is a fraction of the cost of air and requires no compressor. Whiteline publishes lowering kits for the Model 3 at a 20mm drop with matched front and rear rates. Check current availability for your Model Y variant, since spring coverage differs by model and drivetrain.
"It has gone vague and noisy." That is wear, not architecture. Bushings and ball joints lose their accuracy over time and no suspension type is immune. Does the lack of air suspension affect towing or load carrying?
It affects how the car behaves loaded rather than how much it can carry. Air suspension can self level, so a heavily loaded rear sits at normal height. A coil sprung Model Y squats, which reduces rear suspension travel and can leave the rear working close to its bump stops on a fully loaded car.
If you regularly carry weight or tow, that squat is worth managing. Correct rear spring rates and good body control matter more on a loaded car than an empty one, and worn rear bushings show up much faster under load.
