Whiteline Watts link bushes restore precise sideways location to live rear axles fitted with a Watts linkage. Each kit replaces worn factory rubber with Whiteline polyurethane at the side rods and centre pivot, removing the play that causes rear-end squirm, vague handling and an axle that won?t stay centred.
The range includes side rod bush kits and centre pivot bush kits for classic rear-wheel-drive cars with factory Watts link rear suspension. Renewing every bush in the linkage brings back the stable, predictable rear end the design was engineered to deliver.
What a Watts Link Does
A Watts link, or Watts linkage, is a lateral location system for a live rear axle. It has two side rods that run from the body to each end of a centre pivot, sometimes called a rocker or bellcrank, which is mounted on the axle housing.
As the suspension moves up and down, the pivot rotates and the side rods work against each other. This keeps the centre of the axle moving in an almost perfectly straight vertical line. The axle stays centred under the body through its whole range of travel, so the rear of the car stays planted and predictable in corners and over bumps.
The Watts link only works as intended if every joint in it is tight. Bushes at both ends of each side rod and in the centre pivot allow the parts to rotate smoothly while holding them in position. When any of these bushes wears, the geometry the system depends on is lost.
Watts Link vs Panhard Rod
Many live axles use a panhard rod instead: a single rod running across the car from the body to the axle. A panhard rod is simple and effective, but because it swings through an arc, it pulls the axle slightly sideways as the suspension compresses and extends.
A Watts link cancels out that sideways movement, which is why it was chosen for some performance and premium cars. The trade-off is more joints, and more bushes to maintain. A Watts link with tired bushes can end up less precise than a healthy panhard rod, so keeping the bushes in good condition is essential to getting the benefit of the design.
Signs of Worn Watts Link Bushes
- Rear-end squirm or a floating feeling, especially mid-corner or over bumps
- The rear of the car stepping sideways or feeling delayed when changing direction
- Clunks or knocks from the rear when cornering, braking or driving over uneven roads
- Vague, unsettled handling at highway speeds
- Uneven rear tyre wear
- Cracked, squashed or perished rubber at the side rod ends or centre pivot
Worn Watts link bushes are often mistaken for tyre or alignment problems. Because the play is in the lateral location system itself, alignment adjustments can?t correct it while the bushes remain worn.
Types of Watts Link Bush Kits
Side Rod Bushes
Side rod bush kits replace the bushes at both ends of each side rod, where they mount to the body and to the centre pivot. These bushes take the sideways loads in every corner and are usually the first to wear. A complete side rod kit renews all of these positions at once.
Centre Pivot Bushes
The centre pivot bush lets the rocker rotate on its mount on the axle housing. If it wears, the pivot can move sideways or tilt, and the whole linkage loses accuracy even when the side rod bushes are fresh. Pivot kits restore smooth, accurate rotation at this critical point.
For the best result, renew the side rod bushes and the centre pivot bush together. This restores every joint in the linkage to the same condition, so the axle is located consistently and all the bushes wear evenly from a fresh start.
Why Polyurethane Watts Link Bushes
Factory rubber bushes soften, crack and lose shape with age, heat and oil contamination, and the play builds gradually until the axle can move noticeably from side to side.
Whiteline polyurethane Watts link bushes resist compression and hold their shape, so the side rods and pivot stay precisely located under cornering loads. They resist oil, heat, ozone and weathering, and keep their characteristics far longer than rubber. Whiteline formulates its bushes to control lateral movement firmly while still absorbing road vibration, so the car gains precision without unnecessary harshness.
Fitment and Installation
Search by your vehicle and check the fitment notes, kit contents and bush dimensions listed for each kit before ordering. Some applications have more than one rear suspension type, so confirm your vehicle uses a Watts link before you buy.
Watts link bushes can be fitted by a suspension workshop, or by an experienced home mechanic with a press and a safe way to support the vehicle. Follow the instructions supplied with your kit, and keep these points in mind:
- Support the vehicle and the rear axle securely before removing the side rods or centre pivot.
- Press out the old bushes and any outer sleeves completely, then clean the rod eyes and pivot housing.
- Fit the new bushes and tubes supplied, making sure each bush sits evenly in its housing.
- Tighten all fasteners to the manufacturer?s specification with the weight of the vehicle on the suspension, so the bushes aren?t pre-loaded.
- Have a wheel alignment checked after installation.
Who Watts Link Bushes Suit
Watts link bushes suit owners of classic live-axle cars restoring or servicing the original rear suspension, and drivers noticing rear-end squirm, clunks or vague handling. They?re also a worthwhile upgrade for enthusiasts who drive their cars hard on winding roads or at track days, where accurate axle location makes the biggest difference to confidence and lap-to-lap consistency.
Workshops carrying out a full rear suspension overhaul will also find it most efficient to renew the side rod and pivot bushes at the same time as other rear bushes.
Durability and Warranty
Whiteline polyurethane Watts link bushes are built for long service life under constant cornering loads, heat and road grime. They need no routine maintenance beyond a visual check at each service. Every Whiteline component is backed by our warranty, a fitment guarantee and 30 day returns.
