A strut brace connects the tops of the two strut towers across the engine bay of your HSV COMMODORE, tying them together so the load arriving at one is shared with the other rather than absorbed by the shell.
It is the most recognisable piece of chassis bracing there is, and the one most often misunderstood.
The Tower Is the Least Supported Point in the HSV COMMODORE Shell
On a strut suspension the tower carries the top of the entire assembly. Spring load, damper load and steering load all arrive at one point high up in the structure, and that point sits at the top of the inner guard with the engine bay opening right beside it.
That is one of the least triangulated areas of any unibody. There is metal below it and metal behind it, and very little bracing it across the car, because the opening in the middle is where the engine has to go.
Under cornering load the outside tower wants to move outward and upward. The shell resists that on its own to a degree, and a strut tower brace resists it considerably better by making the two towers work against each other instead of each flexing alone.
HSV COMMODORE Camber That Changes Mid Corner
What tower movement actually costs you is geometry.
Move the top of the strut and you have changed camber, because the strut is what locates the top of the hub. So the camber you set on the alignment rack with the car standing still is not the camber the tyre is running at the moment you load the chassis up in a corner. It goes positive exactly when you need it negative.
That is why the effect of a brace shows up as response rather than grip on a spec sheet. Your HSV COMMODORE settles faster after turn in, holds a more consistent line through a long corner, and feels more directly connected to the steering, because the geometry is staying closer to where it was set while load is applied.
The same logic covers spring rate. A spring pushing against a mounting point that moves a little is not delivering quite the rate it is stamped with, since part of the travel is happening in the structure rather than the spring.
Front, Rear and Which One First on Your HSV COMMODORE
Front strut braces are the more common of the two and usually the first fitted, because the front towers take steering load on top of everything else and the front end is where most drivers notice a change.
Rear strut braces do the same job behind the cabin on layouts that allow for it. On a car with a strut rear end and a decent amount of power going through it, a rear brace is worth having, and on a hatch or wagon with a large opening behind the cabin there can be more to gain back there than people expect.
Braces are designed around specific platforms rather than sold as universal bars, because tower spacing, mounting points and engine clearance all vary. Some kits are the brace alone, others include the bolts, washers, nuts or brackets the application needs, and the listing states which.
Where a Strut Brace Earns Its Money on Your HSV COMMODORE
Being straight about this matters, because strut braces attract more claims than almost any other part.
They do the most on a shell with a genuine weak point. Older cars, convertibles with no roof structure, high kilometre cars with fatigued seams, and vehicles now running considerably more grip or power than they were designed around all have something real to gain.
They do the least on a modern, stiff, well triangulated unibody that is already doing its job properly. A front strut brace on a car like that is not going to transform it.
Where a brace reliably pays off is once the rest of the car has been sorted. Fresh bushes, a set alignment, bars that actually deliver their rate, and then the structure becomes the next thing giving way. Bracing is the last piece rather than the first, and fitting one to a car with perished bushes and an alignment that is out will not make up for either.
If you are working through a car in order, that is the order.
Fitting Your HSV COMMODORE Strut Brace at Ride Height, Not on a Hoist
Fit the brace with the car on its wheels at ride height rather than hanging on a hoist, and this matters more than it sounds.
With the suspension drooping, the towers sit in a position the structure does not naturally hold. Bolt a brace up in that state and you have locked the shell into a shape it was never meant to sit in, which is the opposite of what you were trying to achieve. Set it with the weight on the wheels and the structure where it normally lives.
Do not force the brace to reach. If the ends will not line up with the mounting points comfortably, something is wrong, and pulling the towers together with the bolts is preloading rather than bracing.
Torque the mounting hardware to specification, and check bonnet clearance before closing it for the first time, particularly on a car with any intake or engine work.
One practical thing worth planning for. A strut brace sits across the engine bay at the highest point, which is exactly where you need access for plugs, coils and anything on top of the engine. If you work on your own car, quick release clamps are worth looking at at the same time, because they decide whether the brace stays fitted after the first service.
Recheck the fasteners after a few hundred kilometres. No wheel alignment is required, though on a car that has been flexing noticeably it is worth having the geometry checked once the structure is holding its shape properly.

You can never have too much chassis stiffness. Weight aside, the more the better. Chassis bracing maintains alignment angles and spring rates by greatly reducing body or chassis flex. In fact, it helps every component in the suspension system do its job properly and you can feel the difference through improved turn-in, sharper steering response along with greater steering feedback.Front Brace - Strut Tower
