Whiteline camber bolts add camber adjustment to strut suspension that has little or none from the factory. Fitted in place of a standard strut-to-knuckle bolt, they let you tilt the top of the wheel in or out to correct alignment, reduce uneven tyre wear and sharpen front-end grip.
Each kit uses a positive toothed lock washer that bites into the strut, so once the alignment is set it stays set. Camber bolts are sized to match the factory bolt, making them a simple, cost-effective alignment fix for passenger cars, performance vehicles, 4WDs and 4x4s.
What Camber Is and Why It Matters
Camber is the inward or outward tilt of the top of the wheel, viewed from the front of the vehicle. A small amount of negative camber, with the top of the wheel tilted inwards, helps the outside tyre keep more rubber on the road during cornering.
When camber is out of specification, or uneven from side to side, the tyres wear on their inner or outer edges and the vehicle can pull to one side. Grip and steering precision suffer too.
Many vehicles with MacPherson strut suspension have no factory camber adjustment, or very little. When ride height changes, parts wear or the body sags with age, there?s often no way to bring camber back into specification without an aftermarket solution.
How Camber Bolts Work
On a strut suspension, the base of the strut bolts to the steering knuckle (also called the hub carrier or upright) with two bolts. A camber bolt replaces one of these, typically the upper bolt.
The camber bolt has an offset, or eccentric, section that sits in the bolt hole. As the bolt is rotated, the offset moves the top of the knuckle inwards or outwards relative to the strut, changing the wheel?s camber angle. Once the desired setting is reached on the alignment machine, the bolt is tightened to lock it in place.
The adjustment range depends on the bolt size and the vehicle. Each listing shows the range available.
No-Slip Toothed Lock Washer Design
Many camber bolts rely on friction alone to hold their setting. Under heavy cornering, braking or impacts, a friction-only design can slip, letting the alignment drift out again.
Whiteline camber bolts use a positive toothed lock washer that bites into the strut when tightened. This mechanical lock stops the bolt rotating under load, so the setting holds firmly, and it can be readjusted and re-locked later if needed.
When You Need Camber Bolts
Lowered Vehicles
Lowering a vehicle with springs or coilovers usually increases negative camber, as the suspension sits further into its travel. Camber bolts let you bring camber back towards specification for even tyre wear. Alternatively, you can set a little extra negative camber for sharper turn-in and grip.
Lifted 4WDs and 4x4s
Raising ride height on strut-front 4WDs and 4x4s typically reduces negative camber, or pushes it positive. This causes outer-edge tyre wear and lighter steering feel. Camber bolts restore the correct angle without changing the lift.
Worn or Out-of-Specification Suspension
Over time, sagging springs, worn bushes, minor impacts and body settling can push camber out of specification, even on unmodified vehicles. Camber bolts give the alignment technician the adjustment needed to correct it.
Choosing the Right Camber Bolt
- Match the bolt diameter to the factory strut-to-knuckle bolt your vehicle uses. Camber bolts are sized to replace the original bolt directly.
- Check the adjustment range shown on each listing against how much correction your vehicle needs.
- Confirm the fitting position. Camber bolts are most commonly used on front struts. Some vehicles also use strut-type rear suspension where they can apply.
- Consider your use. Some applications allow additional adjustment for motorsport use. Follow the guidance on the listing.
Installation and Wheel Alignment
Camber bolts can be fitted by a workshop or an experienced home mechanic, but the vehicle must be aligned on an alignment machine afterwards. As a general guide:
- Support the vehicle safely and remove the wheel.
- Mark the original strut position, then replace the factory bolt with the camber bolt and toothed lock washer, as described in the kit instructions.
- Lightly tighten the bolt so it can still be rotated.
- On the alignment machine, rotate the bolt to set camber, then tighten all strut bolts to the manufacturer?s specification.
- Set toe last, as changing camber will affect it.
Recheck the alignment after the first few hundred kilometres, especially on lowered or performance vehicles.
Who Camber Bolts Suit
Camber bolts suit owners of lowered and performance cars who want correct camber or extra grip, and drivers of lifted 4WDs and 4x4s correcting tyre wear after a suspension upgrade. They also suit owners of everyday vehicles with uneven tyre wear and no factory camber adjustment, and wheel alignment and tyre specialists who need a reliable adjustment solution on hand.
Strength and Warranty
Whiteline camber bolts are built from high-tensile steel to handle the loads on a strut-to-knuckle joint, and the toothed lock washer keeps the setting secure. Every kit is backed by the Whiteline warranty and fitment guarantee, and you have 30 days to return it if it isn?t right for your vehicle.
