Steering rack bushes locate a rack-and-pinion steering rack against the vehicle's chassis or subframe, helping steering input move the wheels without excessive movement at the rack mounts. When these bushes wear, the rack can move relative to its mounting points and contribute to vague response, clunks or unwanted steering play.
Steering geometry can also be affected when suspension ride height changes. In applications where geometry correction is required, a bump steer correction kit can change the relationship between steering and suspension movement to help control unwanted toe change. Correct diagnosis, fitment and wheel alignment are important for both types of steering work.
What Are Steering Rack Bushes?
Steering rack bushes are used at mounting or supporting points within a rack-and-pinion steering system. The most familiar are steering rack mount bushes, which sit between the steering rack housing and its mounting points on the chassis or subframe.
These bushes help locate the rack while providing some isolation from vibration and harshness.
When the driver turns the steering wheel, the steering rack needs to remain properly located so that movement is transferred through the tie rods towards the wheels. Excessive movement at the mounts can make this relationship less direct.
Not every bush associated with a steering rack performs the same job, however.
Rack Mount Bushes vs Internal Rack Bushes
Rack mount bushes support the steering rack housing where it attaches to the vehicle. Their role is primarily to locate the rack assembly and control movement between the rack housing and its mounting structure.
Internal bushes or guide bushes perform a different function. Depending on the steering rack design, they may support or guide a moving part within the rack itself.
The two should not be treated as interchangeable.
If steering play is present, identifying where that movement originates is important before choosing replacement parts. Movement at a mounting bush requires a different repair from internal wear within the steering rack.
What Do Rack and Pinion Bushes Do?
Rack and pinion bushes help maintain controlled positioning within the steering system. At the rack mounts, the bushes allow the rack housing to remain securely located while providing the compliance required by the original mounting design.
A correctly functioning rack mount helps:
- Locate the steering rack against the chassis or subframe
- Limit unwanted movement of the rack housing
- Maintain a more consistent relationship between steering input and wheel movement
- Isolate some vibration and harshness
- Support predictable steering response
The objective is controlled movement, not simply making every connection as rigid as possible.
Bush design and compliance form part of the overall steering system. Changing that compliance can alter how much steering feedback and vibration reaches the driver.
Signs of Worn Steering Rack Bushes
Worn steering rack bushes can allow the steering rack housing to move more than intended when steering loads change. Depending on the vehicle and severity of wear, this may be noticed as a change in steering feel, noise or visible movement.
Possible signs include:
- Clunking when changing steering direction
- Knocking over uneven surfaces
- Vague or delayed steering response
- Excessive steering play
- Visible movement of the rack housing when steering
- Cracked, distorted or deteriorated mounting bushes
These symptoms can justify an inspection, but they do not confirm that the rack bushes are responsible.
Clunks, Play and Delayed Steering
If a rack mounting bush develops excessive clearance, some steering input can initially move the rack housing rather than being transferred directly through the rack and tie rods.
The driver may perceive this as play or a delay between steering-wheel movement and vehicle response.
Movement at the mounting points can also create a knock or clunk as steering load changes direction.
Visible rack movement during a controlled workshop inspection can help identify worn mounts, but steering is safety-critical and the inspection should be performed using an appropriate procedure.
Other Causes to Rule Out
Similar steering symptoms can result from:
- Inner tie rod wear
- Tie rod end wear
- Ball joints
- Wheel bearings
- Steering column or coupling wear
- Internal steering rack wear
- Loose mounting hardware
- Worn suspension bushes
- Wheel or tyre problems
- Incorrect wheel alignment
A qualified technician should inspect the steering and suspension system before components are replaced, particularly when the source of play is not obvious.
Steering Rack Mount Bushes and Rack Guide Bushes
Although both can be described broadly as steering rack bushes, mounting bushes and guide bushes address different areas of the steering system.
Steering Rack Mount Bushes
Steering rack mount bushes secure and support the rack housing where it attaches to the vehicle. Their condition directly affects how much the complete rack assembly can move relative to the chassis or subframe.
Replacing worn mount bushes can restore the intended support at these attachment points.
Firmer replacement bushes can also reduce compliance at the rack mounts. This may produce a more direct connection between steering input and rack movement, but the trade-off can be increased steering feedback, vibration or harshness depending on the vehicle and bush design.
Steering Rack Guide Bushes
A guide or shaft-supporting bush works within the steering rack rather than mounting the complete housing to the vehicle.
Its purpose depends on the particular rack design, so internal steering rack bushes should not be selected simply because the symptoms resemble worn mounting bushes.
Internal rack wear can require specialist diagnosis or repair. If play originates inside the steering rack, replacing its external mounting bushes will not correct that fault.
What Is Bump Steer?
Bump steer is an unintended change in wheel toe as the suspension moves through bump and rebound. In practical terms, the wheel can steer slightly as it travels up or down even though the driver has not changed the steering-wheel position.
The amount of bump steer is influenced by the relationship between the steering linkage and suspension geometry.
Ride-height changes can alter the operating angles of the tie rods and suspension arms. If their movement paths no longer correspond appropriately, the wheel can experience greater toe change through suspension travel.
This is a geometry issue rather than simply looseness in the steering system.
Worn steering rack bushes and bump steer can therefore both affect steering behaviour, but they are different problems requiring different diagnosis and correction.
How Does a Bump Steer Correction Kit Work?
A bump steer correction kit changes specific steering geometry to reduce unwanted toe change as the suspension moves. The exact method depends on the suspension and steering design.
Geometry correction can involve repositioning a steering component or changing a mounting relationship so the tie rods operate at a more appropriate angle relative to suspension movement.
The objective is to improve the relationship between the arc travelled by the steering linkage and the path followed by the suspension.
This is different from simply adjusting static toe during a wheel alignment. An alignment sets the wheel angles at a particular ride height, while bump steer describes how toe changes as the suspension moves.
Because geometry correction affects steering and alignment, the complete suspension setup needs to be considered when choosing and installing a correction kit.
Will Firmer Steering Rack Bushes Change Steering Feel?
They can. Firmer steering rack bushes may reduce compliance at the rack mounts, allowing less movement of the rack housing under steering load. This can produce a more direct steering response where excessive mount movement was present.
There is also a trade-off. Reducing compliance can allow more road texture, vibration or harshness to travel through the steering system. The amount of change depends on the vehicle, bush design and condition of the components being replaced.
Firmer bushes should therefore be considered a change in steering characteristics rather than automatically being described as better in every situation.
How Are Steering Rack Bushes Replaced?
Steering rack bush replacement involves accessing the rack mounting points, supporting the rack correctly and removing the worn bushes before installing the replacements.
Access can vary significantly between vehicles. On some layouts the mounts are relatively accessible, while others can require surrounding components or the subframe to be loosened or repositioned.
What Steering Rack Bush Replacement Involves
Depending on the vehicle, the work may include:
- Safely raising and supporting the vehicle
- Locating and inspecting the rack mounts
- Supporting the steering rack or related components
- Removing the rack mounting hardware
- Removing the existing bushes
- Inspecting mounting surfaces and hardware
- Installing the replacement bushes in the correct orientation
- Reassembling the mounts
- Tightening fasteners to the manufacturer's specifications
- Checking steering operation and clearance
If a particular installation requires a removal or pressing tool, use the correct tool and procedure rather than forcing the bush from its housing.
Safety and Wheel Alignment
The steering rack is a safety-critical component. Incorrect mounting, damaged fasteners or improper reassembly can directly affect steering control.
Never work underneath a vehicle supported only by a jack. Use suitable lifting and supporting equipment and follow the manufacturer's workshop procedure.
Professional installation is recommended where steering rack access requires significant disassembly or where the source of steering play has not been confirmed.
A wheel alignment should be checked after steering rack work, and it is particularly important after fitting a bump steer correction kit or carrying out work that changes steering geometry.
Choosing Steering Rack Bushes and Geometry Correction Parts
Correct selection depends on what is actually causing the steering issue. A worn rack mount, internal rack wear and undesirable bump steer can produce steering complaints, but they are not the same problem.
Before ordering, consider:
- Vehicle application
- Steering rack design
- Location of any unwanted movement
- Mounting bush dimensions and configuration
- Current suspension ride height
- Existing suspension modifications
- Whether steering geometry has been changed
- Installation and alignment requirements
If the steering rack itself is damaged or has excessive internal wear, replacement mounting bushes will not repair the internal fault.
