Track Bar Bushings for 1987 Jeep Wrangler Base

Two bushings hold a live axle in the center of your Jeep Wrangler, and there is no third one backing them up.

Whatever movement those two allow, the axle takes, and there is nothing else in the suspension arranged to stop it.

Two Bushings With No Backup

A track bar runs laterally between the chassis and the axle, with one bushing at each end.

That is the entire lateral locating system on most coil sprung live axles. The springs carry weight, the trailing or radius arms handle fore and aft position, and the track bar does sideways on its own.

Compare that with a multi link rear end where several arms share the work, and losing one degrades part of the geometry while the rest holds.

Here, a worn bushing at either end lets the axle move, and the other bushing cannot compensate because it is at the opposite end of the same bar.

It is one of the few places on a vehicle where a single failed bushing changes where an entire axle sits.

Loaded in Tension and Compression, Not Rotation

These bushings work differently to most and it explains how they fail.

A control arm bushing spends its life rotating as the arm swings. Wear there shows up as an oval bore from the pivoting action.

A track bar bushing barely rotates at all in use. The bar swings through a shallow arc as the suspension moves, but its primary job is resisting side load along its own axis.

Every time the vehicle corners, the cornering force tries to push the axle sideways, and that force arrives at each bushing as a straight push or pull through the bar.

So they fail by compressing and tearing rather than by wearing oval. The rubber is crushed against one side of the housing on every corner and stretched on the other, until it separates from its sleeve or splits.

That is also why the failure is often invisible until the joint is levered, since a torn bushing can look intact while allowing significant movement under load.

How Much Movement Worn Bushings Actually Allow

Small numbers at the bushing become large ones at the wheel.

A few millimeters of play at each end of the track bar means the axle can shift that far side to side relative to the body.

On the rear, that reads as the back of the vehicle stepping sideways over mid corner bumps, and as a vehicle that tracks slightly crooked down a straight road.

On a solid front axle it is worse, because the axle carries the steering. An axle moving laterally under the vehicle takes the steering linkage with it, which puts an input into the steering that the driver never asked for.

Add the fact that the two ends rarely wear evenly, and the axle moves more readily in one direction than the other, which produces a pull that no alignment will correct.

Signs the Bushings Have Gone on Your Jeep Wrangler

The symptoms are specific enough to separate from other suspension wear.

A vehicle that wanders at highway speed and needs constant small corrections is the most common, since the axle is moving and the driver is correcting for it without realizing.

Wheels sitting visibly off center in the arches follow, with one tire closer to the guard than the other when viewed from behind.

A clunk from the center of the axle over bumps and driveways arrives once play has developed enough for the joint to move freely.

On the front, a shimmy through the steering wheel after hitting a bump is the one that concerns people most, and it is worth acting on immediately.

Uneven tire wear with no alignment fault found is the quiet symptom, since an axle that moves is scrubbing rubber every time it does.

And a vehicle that pulls to one side despite repeated alignments is describing bushings that have worn unevenly between the two ends.

Checking Them Without Guessing

The lever test is quick and more reliable than listening.

With the vehicle supported and the suspension loaded, get a bar between the track bar and the axle bracket and lever firmly while watching the bushing.

Any movement at the sleeve is play that should not exist, since this joint should only rotate through a small arc rather than translate.

Do the chassis end the same way, and compare the two. Uneven movement between them tells you which is further gone.

Measure the axle position while you are under there. Compare the distance from the axle housing to the chassis rail on each side, which shows whether the axle has already shifted off center.

Jeep Wrangler Front Track Bar Bushings and Steering Instability

This is the consequence worth taking seriously on a solid front axle vehicle.

A front track bar locates the axle laterally while the steering box or rack is mounted to the chassis. The drag link has to cross between the two.

If the axle can move sideways relative to the chassis, the relationship between the steering box and the axle changes as it does. The wheels get steered by axle movement rather than by the driver.

That interaction is one of the recognized contributors to the self sustaining front end oscillation solid axle owners describe as wobble, where a bump sets off a shake that feeds on itself.

Worn track bar bushings are rarely the only cause, and they are consistently on the list of things to check first because the mechanism is direct and the part is inexpensive.

Any play found at a front track bar is worth addressing rather than monitoring.

The Chassis End and the Axle End

The two positions see different conditions even though the load through them is identical.

The axle end sits low, directly in the path of everything the tires throw up, and it moves with the axle through the full suspension travel. Water, grit and salt reach it constantly from the road.

The chassis end is usually higher and better sheltered, bolted to a bracket on the frame rail or a crossmember.

That difference means the axle end typically goes first, and a vehicle can have one failed bushing and one that still looks serviceable.

Replace both ends regardless of how they look. A new bushing at one end against a tired one at the other still lets the axle move, and the new part carries load unevenly while doing it.

Check the brackets at both ends while you are there, since the loads that destroy bushings also elongate mounting holes.

Why Lifted Vehicles Like the Jeep Wrangler Eat Them

Lifting changes how hard these bushings work, in two ways at once.

The bar sits at a steeper angle after a lift, which means the lateral force is applied through the bushings at a less favorable angle than designed.

The arc the bar swings through also changes, so the small amount of rotation the bushings were designed to accommodate becomes a larger amount, adding a wear mode they were not specified for.

Larger tires compound it by increasing the leverage the road applies to the axle, so more force arrives at the same two joints.

On a vehicle that has been lifted and is eating track bar bushings, the geometry is usually the problem rather than the parts. An adjustable bar or a relocation bracket addresses the cause.

Material and What It Changes

Factory rubber isolates well and compresses under the exact loading this joint produces.

Polyurethane holds its shape against compression far better, which is precisely what a bushing loaded in push and pull needs. The axle stays where the bar put it rather than drifting under load.

The trade is noise and vibration reaching the body, which on a live axle vehicle already carrying driveline noise is a smaller change than it would be on a car.

Where a bar uses rod ends instead, movement is removed entirely at the cost of service life and refinement, which suits competition use more than a road vehicle.

For most vehicles polyurethane is the sensible middle, since the loading here rewards resistance to compression more than it rewards isolation.

Track Bar Bushing Replacement Done Properly

Support the axle before releasing either end, since the bar is holding it laterally and removing it lets the axle move.

Expect to find the through bolts seized in place. These sit low, collect water and are often untouched since the vehicle was built.

Press the new bushings in square with proper tooling. The housing is thick and a bushing fitted crooked will not hold the axle where it should.

Torque at ride height with the vehicle on its wheels rather than hanging, because the bushing takes its set from where it is clamped.

Measure the axle's position once everything is torqued. Compare the gap from the axle housing to the chassis rail on both sides, since the whole point is having the axle centered.
