Whiteline bump stops cushion your suspension at the very end of its travel, preventing harsh bottoming out and protecting shocks, springs and mounts from damage. Made from tough polyurethane, they absorb heavy impacts progressively, so the suspension reaches its limit smoothly instead of with a jarring crash.
The range covers front and rear bump stops in a variety of mounting styles and sizes. They suit passenger cars, performance and lowered vehicles, 4WDs, 4x4s and classic restorations, as direct replacements for worn originals or as an upgrade for modified suspension.
What Bump Stops Do
Every suspension has a limit to how far it can compress. The bump stop is the last line of defence at that limit. When the suspension nears full compression, from a large pothole, a heavy load or a hard landing off-road, the bump stop makes contact and absorbs the remaining energy before metal parts can hit each other.
Most bump stops are progressive. They?re soft on initial contact, then stiffen rapidly as they compress further. Once engaged, a bump stop works alongside the main spring, adding to the overall spring rate at that corner. This cushions the final stage of travel instead of stopping it abruptly.
A healthy bump stop protects shock absorbers from bottoming out internally, stops tyres hitting wheel arches, and prevents suspension arms and mounts from slamming into the chassis. It also keeps the car more settled when the suspension is pushed to its limit.
Signs Your Bump Stops Need Replacing
- A harsh bang or crash over large bumps, dips or speed humps
- The suspension bottoming out more easily than before, especially when loaded
- Cracked, crumbling, flattened or missing bump stops
- Tyre rub on the wheel arches under heavy compression
- Marks or damage on suspension arms or the chassis where the bump stop should make contact
Rubber bump stops can perish and fall apart without obvious warning, so check them whenever the suspension is being serviced.
Polyurethane vs Rubber Bump Stops
Factory bump stops are often made from rubber or foam. Over time, they break down from heat, oil, ozone and repeated impacts, becoming hard and cracked or crumbling away entirely.
Whiteline polyurethane bump stops offer outstanding abrasion resistance and high load-bearing capability, with resistance to oil, grease, ozone and weathering. They hold their shape and progressive cushioning far longer than rubber, so the suspension stays protected for longer, even on vehicles that carry heavy loads, tow or travel off-road.
Bump Stop Mounting Styles
Bump stops attach in several different ways, depending on the vehicle and where they sit in the suspension:
- Stud-mount bump stops have one or more threaded studs or holes in the base that bolt to the chassis or suspension arm.
- Bolt-through or sleeve-style bump stops have a central bore and fit over a bolt or the shaft of a shock absorber.
- Upper and lower bump stops fit at different points in the suspension, depending on the design. Some vehicles use both.
Each listing shows the mounting style and dimensions, so you can match the new bump stop to your existing mount.
Bump Stops for Lowered Vehicles
Lowering a vehicle reduces the distance between the suspension and its limit. With factory-length bump stops, a lowered car can end up riding on them during normal driving, which feels harsh and unsettles handling.
A shorter or correctly specified bump stop restores usable travel while still protecting the suspension at full compression. When lowering, check the gap between the bump stop and its contact point at normal ride height, and choose a bump stop that leaves enough clearance for everyday bumps.
Bump Stops for Lifted 4WDs and 4x4s
Lifting a 4WD or 4x4, or fitting larger tyres, changes how far the suspension can compress before something makes contact. Factory bump stops may no longer stop the suspension before the shocks bottom out internally, or before larger tyres hit the body.
Extended or vehicle-specific bump stops engage earlier in the travel to prevent this damage. When upgrading suspension height, check the bump stop engagement point against the shock length and tyre clearance at full compression.
Choosing and Fitting the Right Bump Stop
- Match the mounting style to your existing mount: stud, bolt-through, or sleeve over a shock shaft.
- Check the dimensions, including length, width, height, outside and inside diameter, and stud or hole spacing where applicable.
- Confirm the fitting position, front or rear, upper or lower.
- Consider your ride height. Lowered vehicles may need shorter bump stops, and lifted vehicles may need longer ones.
Bump stops can be fitted by a workshop or an experienced home mechanic. Support the vehicle safely, clean the mounting area, and tighten fasteners to the manufacturer?s specification. Where bump stops fit over a shock shaft, replace any damaged dust boots at the same time to keep dirt off the shock seal.
For performance and motorsport setups, small packers or spacers can fine-tune where the bump stop engages.
Who Bump Stops Suit
Bump stops suit drivers of lowered and performance cars who want to keep usable suspension travel without harsh bottoming out. They also suit owners of lifted 4WDs and 4x4s protecting shocks, tyres and bodywork, and anyone who regularly carries heavy loads or tows. Classic car restorers replacing perished originals are well served too, as are workshops servicing suspension on a wide range of vehicles.
Durability and Warranty
Whiteline polyurethane bump stops are built to withstand repeated heavy compression, heat and harsh conditions without crumbling. They need no routine maintenance beyond a visual check at each service. They?re also covered by the same warranty, fitment guarantee and 30 day returns as every Whiteline component, so you can buy with confidence.
