Suspension bolts are safety-critical fasteners used to locate and secure suspension components or provide adjustment at specific mounting points. Unlike general-purpose nuts, bolts and screws, suspension hardware must match the component, mounting dimensions, fastener specification and intended function.
A suspension bolt kit can include purpose-specific bolts together with matching nuts and washers for jobs such as control arm servicing or wheel alignment adjustment. Correct fitment is essential. Suspension hardware should never be selected simply because a general fastener has the same apparent diameter or thread.
Types of Suspension Bolts and Hardware
Suspension hardware can perform different jobs depending on where it is fitted. Some fasteners primarily secure components in a fixed position, while others form part of an adjustment mechanism.
Understanding the purpose of the original fastener is important before replacing it.
Control Arm Service Hardware
Control arm bolts secure the arm at its mounting points and allow the suspension to pivot around its intended locations.
Service hardware may be required when a control arm is removed for maintenance, when existing fasteners are damaged or corroded, or when replacement hardware is specified during installation.
The replacement bolt, nut and washer arrangement must match the control arm and mounting point. Diameter and thread alone are not enough to confirm suitability.
Toe Adjuster Bolts
A toe adjuster bolt is designed to provide alignment adjustment rather than simply clamp a suspension component in one fixed position.
These fasteners commonly use an eccentric section or work with eccentric washers. Rotating the adjuster changes the position of the suspension mounting point, allowing the technician to alter wheel alignment.
Because its position directly affects suspension geometry, a toe adjuster must be correctly installed and set during a professional wheel alignment.
What Is a Control Arm Service Kit?
A control arm service kit provides replacement mounting hardware required for servicing or refitting a compatible control arm.
Depending on the application, this can include purpose-specific bolts, nuts and washers that secure the control arm to its mounting points.
These components experience significant loads as the suspension moves, accelerates, brakes and corners. Correct hardware specification is therefore important.
Do not replace suspension mounting hardware with a generic fastener solely because it appears to fit. Bolt grade, dimensions, shank design, thread engagement, washer arrangement and locking method can all matter.
If servicing an aftermarket control arm, confirm that the hardware is designed for that specific arm and mounting arrangement.
What Is a Toe Adjuster Bolt?
A toe adjuster bolt is an alignment fastener that allows the position of a suspension arm or mounting point to be changed to adjust rear toe.
Many designs use an eccentric bolt, eccentric washer or both. As the fastener is rotated, the eccentric mechanism moves the mounting point through a controlled range.
This gives an alignment technician a way to alter wheel position rather than simply tightening the component in one fixed location.
Replacement may be necessary if the original adjuster is seized, damaged or too corroded to move or clamp correctly.
Toe vs Camber Adjustment
Toe describes whether the wheels point slightly towards or away from each other when viewed from above. A toe adjuster changes geometry associated with this measurement.
Camber describes the inward or outward tilt of the wheel when viewed from the front.
Both can use eccentric hardware on certain suspension designs, but a toe adjustment bolt should not automatically be treated as a camber bolt. The effect of an eccentric fastener depends on its location and the suspension geometry it controls.
Where dedicated camber adjustment is required, use a component designed for that purpose.
Why Replace Suspension Bolts?
Suspension bolts may need replacement when they are damaged, corroded, seized or specified for replacement during suspension servicing. Adjustment hardware can be particularly vulnerable because corrosion may prevent an eccentric bolt from rotating or being removed normally.
Inspect the fastener and surrounding components whenever suspension hardware is removed.
Reasons for replacement can include:
- Corrosion
- Damaged threads
- Rounded or damaged heads
- Seized adjustment mechanisms
- Distortion or other physical damage
- Damaged locking hardware
- Manufacturer instructions requiring new hardware
- Hardware unsuitable for reuse
Do not assume that replacing a bolt will correct an underlying suspension problem. Inspect the mounting point, bushes and related components as part of the repair.
Seized and Rusted Adjustment Bolts
Alignment bolts can seize within bushes or mounting sleeves after long-term exposure to moisture, dirt and corrosion.
A seized eccentric adjuster may prevent an alignment technician from making the required adjustment even if the rest of the suspension remains serviceable.
Removal can sometimes require additional disassembly or specialised equipment.
Avoid uncontrolled force or heat around suspension bushes, fuel lines, brake components and other heat-sensitive parts. Where an adjuster cannot be safely removed using appropriate workshop procedures, have the work completed by a qualified technician.
Can You Reuse Suspension Bolts and Nuts?
Some suspension hardware can be reused, while other bolts or nuts must be replaced after removal. The correct approach depends on the fastener design and the vehicle or component manufacturer's instructions.
For example, certain self-locking nuts and torque-to-yield fasteners may be specified for single use.
Before reassembly:
- Inspect threads and mating surfaces
- Check for corrosion or physical damage
- Confirm whether replacement is specified
- Use the correct nut and washer arrangement
- Follow the required tightening procedure
- Use the specified torque rather than estimating tightness
Never assume safety-critical suspension hardware is reusable simply because it looks undamaged.
Do You Need an Alignment After Replacing Adjustment Bolts?
Yes. Replacing a toe, camber or other alignment-adjustment fastener can change suspension geometry, so the vehicle should receive a professional wheel alignment afterwards.
Even if the new adjuster is installed in approximately the same position as the old one, visual positioning is not accurate enough to confirm final wheel alignment.
The technician should measure the relevant alignment angles and set the adjuster appropriately.
How Are Suspension Bolts Replaced?
Suspension bolt replacement involves safely supporting the vehicle and relevant suspension components, removing the existing fastener and installing the correct replacement hardware. The exact procedure depends on the component, suspension design and whether the bolt also controls alignment.
Installation and Safety
Before removing suspension hardware:
- Support the vehicle using appropriate stands or workshop lifting equipment
- Support suspension components where required
- Never work beneath a vehicle supported only by a jack
- Follow the correct removal and installation procedure
- Maintain control of components that may move when a fastener is removed
- Use the specified tightening sequence and torque
- Replace single-use hardware where required
Removing one fastener at a time can help keep components located on some jobs, but this is not appropriate for every suspension design. Follow the applicable workshop procedure rather than treating it as a universal rule.
Suspension components can also be affected by spring forces and vehicle load. Use a qualified technician where safe removal requires specialised equipment or procedures.
Choosing Suspension Bolts for Your Vehicle
Choose suspension bolts according to the vehicle, suspension component and function of the original hardware.
For aftermarket suspension components, confirm whether the replacement hardware is designed for that particular component rather than relying only on the vehicle application.
