Panhard rods locate a solid axle laterally, controlling its side-to-side position relative to the vehicle body as the suspension moves. When ride height changes, the angle of the Panhard rod also changes and can move the axle away from its original centred position.
An adjustable Panhard rod provides a way to correct this by changing the effective rod length. This can be useful on lifted 4WDs as well as lowered vehicles using a compatible solid-axle suspension. Panhard rod fitment is specific to the suspension design, axle position and required adjustment, so the complete vehicle setup should be considered before choosing a replacement.
What Is a Panhard Rod?
A Panhard rod is a lateral suspension link that connects one side of a solid axle to the opposite side of the chassis or body.
Its primary purpose is to locate the axle sideways while still allowing it to move vertically with the suspension.
The mounting points at opposite ends create a lateral locating link across the vehicle. As the axle moves through bump and rebound, the rod pivots around these mounting points.
Panhard rods are commonly associated with coil-sprung solid-axle suspension because the coil springs themselves do not positively locate the axle laterally.
What Does a Panhard Rod Do?
A Panhard rod controls lateral axle movement, keeping the solid axle located relative to the chassis during suspension movement, cornering and changes in load.
Other suspension links may control the axle's fore-aft movement and rotation, while the Panhard rod deals primarily with side-to-side location.
The rod does not hold the axle in one perfectly fixed lateral position throughout its travel. Because it pivots through an arc, a small amount of sideways movement occurs as the suspension moves up and down.
The length and angle of the rod influence that movement, which becomes particularly important when ride height is changed.
Why Does a Lift or Lowering Shift the Axle Sideways?
Changing ride height changes the resting angle of the Panhard rod. Because the rod has a fixed length and moves through an arc, that change in angle can pull or push the axle sideways relative to the body.
Imagine the rod pivoting from one chassis mounting point rather than travelling straight up and down. As its angle changes, the opposite end follows an arc.
At the original ride height, the suspension geometry is designed around a particular point on that arc.
Raise or lower the vehicle and the suspension settles at a different point. With a fixed-length rod, the axle may then sit slightly towards one side.
The amount of displacement depends on:
Panhard rod length
Original rod angle
Amount of ride-height change
Mounting-point positions
Suspension design
This is why two vehicles with similar ride-height changes do not necessarily require the same amount of correction.
What Is an Adjustable Panhard Rod?
An adjustable Panhard rod allows its effective length to be changed so the axle can be repositioned laterally after a change in ride height.
Rather than accepting the axle position created by a fixed-length rod, the adjustable design lets the suspension be set with the axle appropriately centred at normal ride height.
This is useful when lifting or lowering has created measurable lateral axle displacement.
Adjustment should be based on the actual vehicle rather than a predetermined assumption about how much correction a particular lift or drop requires.
Off-Car Adjustable Panhard Rods
An off-car adjustable rod is removed or disconnected so its length can be changed before it is refitted.
Whiteline uses off-car adjustment on applicable Panhard rod designs. The rod is set to the required length, installed and the resulting axle position checked at normal ride height.
Adjustment may need to be repeated if the axle is not correctly positioned after the first setting.
Fixed Panhard Rods
A fixed Panhard rod has no length adjustment.
Fixed rods still perform the essential job of locating the axle laterally and may be appropriate where no geometry correction is required.
The key distinction is therefore not that an adjustable rod is universally better. It provides an additional means of correcting axle position where the suspension setup requires it.
Do You Need an Adjustable Panhard Rod After a Lift?
Not every lifted vehicle needs an adjustable Panhard rod. It becomes relevant when the ride-height change causes the solid axle to move laterally far enough that correction is required.
Larger lifts can make this effect more noticeable, but there is no universal lift height at which every vehicle needs an adjustable rod.
Instead, check the axle position at the vehicle's normal ride height.
Also consider tyre-to-body clearance and the position of the wheels relative to the body on each side. If the axle is measurably displaced, an appropriately adjusted Panhard rod can be used to correct its lateral position.
Front or Rear Panhard Rod: Which Do You Need?
Whether you need a front or rear Panhard rod depends on the vehicle's suspension design and which axle requires lateral location or correction.
Some solid-axle suspension systems use a Panhard rod at the front, some at the rear, and some use one at both ends.
A front Panhard rod and rear Panhard rod should not be treated as interchangeable. Their lengths, mounting points, bush arrangements and required adjustment are specific to their suspension positions.
Identify which axle has shifted and confirm the correct application before selecting a replacement or adjustable rod.
What's the Difference Between a Panhard Rod and a Watts Link?
A Panhard rod and Watts link both provide lateral axle location, but they use different geometry to control side-to-side movement.
A Panhard rod uses one lateral bar running between the axle and chassis. Because the rod swings through an arc, the axle experiences some lateral displacement through its suspension travel.
A Watts link uses multiple links and a central pivot arrangement. Its geometry is designed to keep the axle closer to the vehicle centreline through vertical movement.
The Panhard arrangement is mechanically simpler, while a Watts link uses additional components to control its lateral movement path.
Neither should be substituted for the other without considering the suspension system they were designed to work with.
What Are Whiteline Panhard Rods Made From?
Construction varies by Panhard rod application, so material and joint specifications should be confirmed for the particular component.
Whiteline specifies features such as DOM steel tube and forged ends on applicable Panhard rod designs. Depending on the application, mounting points may also use low-compliance bushings, GIIRO bush technology or spherical bearing arrangements.
These different joint designs can suit different suspension requirements, so they should not be treated as universal features of every Panhard rod.
Where GIIRO bush technology is specified, Whiteline describes it as a grease-free design. Check the applicable component's installation and maintenance requirements rather than assuming every Panhard rod uses the same bushing system.
How Is a Panhard Rod Fitted?
Panhard rod installation involves safely supporting the vehicle and axle, removing the existing rod and fitting the replacement between its correct chassis and axle mounting points. With an adjustable rod, its length must then be set so the axle is appropriately positioned at normal ride height.
The exact procedure depends on the suspension design.
What the Job Involves
A typical installation may involve:
Supporting the vehicle and axle safely
Removing the existing Panhard rod
Inspecting the mounting points and hardware
Setting the initial length of an adjustable rod
Installing the replacement in the correct orientation
Settling the suspension at normal ride height
Checking the axle position relative to the vehicle
Adjusting the rod again if required
Tightening fasteners to the manufacturer's specification
Checking surrounding suspension and tyre clearances
Where bonded or compliant bushes are used, the applicable installation procedure should be followed regarding final tightening at normal ride height. This helps avoid placing unintended preload into bushes that are designed to operate around their normal resting position.
Installation and Safety
Never work underneath a vehicle supported only by a jack. Use suitable stands or workshop lifting equipment and support the axle appropriately before removing a locating link.
The axle may move when the existing Panhard rod is disconnected, so it must remain safely controlled throughout the job.
After installation, check the complete suspension setup and have the vehicle's wheel alignment inspected, particularly where ride height or other suspension components have also been changed.
Use a qualified technician if you do not have the equipment or experience required to safely locate, support and adjust the axle.
Choosing a Panhard Rod for Your Vehicle
Choose a Panhard rod according to the vehicle's suspension design, front or rear position, ride height and amount of lateral axle correction required.
For an adjustable setup, measure axle position rather than selecting adjustment based solely on the advertised lift or lowering height.
Whiteline can assist with fitment if you're unsure which Panhard rod suits your suspension setup.
