Whiteline universal sway bar link bushes and washers restore the firm connection between your sway bar and suspension. They replace the soft, cracked or flattened rubber bushes found on worn sway bar end links, also called drop links. Matched by size rather than by vehicle, they suit bolt-type sway bar links on cars, 4WDs, 4x4s, SUVs and restored vehicles.
Link bushes may be small, but they have a big influence on how your sway bar works. Fresh bushes and supporting washers remove free play, stop clunks and rattles, and help the sway bar respond immediately as the body begins to roll.
What Sway Bar Link Bushes Do
A sway bar (also called an anti-roll bar or stabiliser bar) connects the left and right sides of the suspension to reduce body roll in corners. The sway bar links connect each end of the bar to the suspension, usually the control arm or strut.
On bolt-type links, bushes sit at each end of the link, cushioning the connection while allowing a small amount of articulation as the suspension moves. When the bushes are firm, the sway bar starts working the moment the body begins to roll. When they?re worn, the bar has to take up the slack before it can do its job. That delays its response and reduces its effectiveness.
How Bolt-Type Sway Bar Links Are Assembled
A typical bolt-type sway bar link uses a central pin or bolt that passes through the sway bar eye and the mount on the suspension arm. At each mounting point, the assembly is stacked in order:
- A washer
- A bush
- The sway bar eye or suspension mount
- A second bush
- A second washer
A sleeve or spacer between the two mounting points sets the correct distance, and a nut at each end clamps the stack together. This arrangement allows the link to articulate slightly while holding the sway bar firmly.
Why the Washers Matter
The washers in a sway bar link aren?t just spacers. They support the bushes and spread the clamping load evenly across their faces. Cupped washers are shaped to cradle the bush, so it can?t squeeze out sideways under load. This is known as extrusion.
When washers are bent, corroded, undersized or missing, the bushes can deform, split or push out of position. That quickly brings back noise and play. Replacing the washers along with the bushes ensures the new bushes are properly supported and last as long as possible.
Signs of Worn Sway Bar Link Bushes
- Clunking, knocking or rattling from the front or rear over bumps and uneven roads
- More body roll than usual through corners
- A delayed or vague feel when turning into a corner
- Cracked, split, flattened or missing rubber at the link ends
- Visible gaps or movement between the link, washers and sway bar
How to Inspect Sway Bar Link Bushes
Sway bar link bushes are easy to check during routine servicing:
- With the vehicle safely supported, look closely at each end of each link. Check the bushes for cracks, splits, flattening or bush material squeezed out from under the washers.
- Check the washers for bending, corrosion or dishing.
- Grip the link and try to move it by hand. Any clunk or free play indicates worn bushes or loose fasteners.
- Check that the nuts are tight and the pin or bolt isn?t bent.
Inspect the links whenever the suspension is serviced, and before long trips or track days.
Polyurethane vs Rubber Link Bushes
Factory rubber link bushes are soft, and they deteriorate over time from heat, oil, water and constant movement. Once they compress or crack, free play develops quickly.
Whiteline polyurethane link bushes offer outstanding abrasion resistance, high load-bearing capability, flexibility and increased tensile strength. They resist oil, grease, ozone and weathering, so they hold the link firmly for longer. They also deliver more immediate sway bar response, with less deflection than rubber.
Replacing Bushes vs Replacing Complete Links
When a sway bar link becomes noisy, the pin, sleeve and threads are often still in good condition, and only the bushes and washers have worn. In that case, replacing the bushes and washers is a practical, cost-effective repair that restores the link to firm, quiet operation.
If the pin is bent, the threads are damaged, or the sleeve is corroded, replace the complete link instead. Either way, replace link bushes in pairs across the axle, so both sides perform the same.
How to Measure and Choose Link Bushes
Universal sway bar link bushes are listed by their dimensions:
- Outside diameter (OD): the diameter of the bush face
- Inside diameter (ID): must suit the link pin or bolt diameter
- Length (L): the thickness of the bush
- Washer size: must match the bush outside diameter and the pin diameter
Measure the link pin and the existing washers. Also check the diameter of the hole in the sway bar eye and the suspension mount, so the bush spigot locates correctly. Each listing shows the dimensions, so you can match them to your link.
Fitting Sway Bar Link Bushes and Washers
Link bushes can be replaced with basic tools by a workshop or an experienced home mechanic:
- Support the vehicle safely, with the suspension at normal ride height where possible. This prevents the sway bar being preloaded when the links are tightened.
- Remove the nuts, washers and old bushes from each end of the link.
- Clean the link pin and the mounting surfaces.
- Reassemble each end in the correct order, with cupped washers facing towards the bushes.
- Tighten the nuts evenly until the bushes are firmly clamped, following the vehicle or link manufacturer?s guidance. Avoid over-compressing the bushes.
- Check the left and right links are set the same, so the sway bar sits evenly.
Who Sway Bar Link Bushes Suit
Sway bar link bushes suit owners with clunking or rattling sway bar links on everyday vehicles, and drivers who want sharper turn-in and less body roll. They?re also used by 4WD and 4x4 owners whose links have worn from rough roads and off-road use, by restorers refreshing suspension hardware on older vehicles, and by workshops keeping common link bush sizes on hand.
