Protect essential braking-system connections after increasing your 4WD's ride height with Whiteline brake extension and relocation kits. Designed for selected lifted 4WD applications, these components help address changes that can affect brake lines, ABS wiring, handbrake cables and rear brake proportioning valve operation after a suspension lift.
These aren't performance brake upgrades such as pads, rotors or calipers. They are application-specific supporting components designed to help maintain appropriate routing, movement and adjustment of existing braking-system components when vehicle ride height changes.
Brakes and Suspension Lifts
Lifting a 4WD changes more than the distance between the body and the ground. Depending on the suspension design and application, increased ride height and suspension movement can affect the available movement or positioning of brake lines, ABS leads and handbrake cables. Components that had sufficient movement at standard ride height may require repositioning or extension after the suspension has been lifted.
The rear brake proportioning system can also require attention on vehicles that use a load-sensitive valve arrangement. Changing vehicle ride height can affect the relationship between the axle, suspension and valve linkage, so an appropriate extension or adjustment may be required to restore the intended rear brake bias.
This is why brake-related components should be considered as part of the complete lift rather than checked only after a problem appears.
Brake Extension Kits
The brake components required after a lift depend on the vehicle and its braking and suspension layout. Not every lifted 4WD requires every type of extension or relocation component, so parts should be selected according to confirmed vehicle fitment and the requirements of the suspension setup.
Brake Line Extension Mounts
Brake hoses and lines need sufficient movement throughout the suspension's operating range without being placed under inappropriate tension. Increasing suspension height can change their routing or available movement on some applications, particularly as the suspension moves towards full extension.
A brake line extension mount repositions the existing brake line mounting point where required for the lifted application. This helps address situations where the original mounting position would otherwise place excessive strain on the line as the suspension moves.
These components aren't replacement performance brake lines and shouldn't be confused with braided brake hose upgrades.
ABS Wire Extensions and Relocation
Vehicles equipped with ABS rely on wiring running to wheel-speed sensors. Like brake lines, those leads need sufficient movement as the suspension travels through its operating range.
A suspension lift can change the relationship between the mounting points and increase the movement required from the ABS wiring on some vehicles. ABS extension and relocation components reposition the relevant mounting points to help prevent the leads from being stretched as the suspension moves.
These products don't replace ABS sensors or modify the ABS calibration. Their purpose is to address the physical routing and available movement of the existing wiring on compatible lifted applications.
Brake Proportioning Valve Extensions
Some 4WDs use a rear load-sensing proportioning valve as part of the braking system. This type of system uses the relationship between the vehicle body and rear suspension or axle to influence rear brake proportioning according to vehicle load.
Changing suspension height can alter that relationship. On compatible lifted vehicles, an extension to the valve linkage allows the system to be adjusted to account for the new ride height and restore the intended rear brake bias.
This isn't a universal requirement for every lifted 4WD because braking-system designs vary significantly between vehicles. Where the vehicle uses the applicable load-sensitive arrangement, however, the valve linkage should be considered as part of the lift rather than assuming the original position remains suitable.
Handbrake Cable Extensions
The handbrake or parking-brake cable also needs sufficient movement and suitable routing as the suspension travels. On some 4WD applications, increasing ride height can place additional tension on the existing cable arrangement.
A handbrake cable extension changes the relevant mounting position so the cable can accommodate the lifted suspension configuration. Depending on the application, the extension arrangement may work from a mounting point around the differential or leaf spring assembly.
These components don't replace a worn or damaged handbrake cable. If the cable itself is deteriorated, seized or otherwise unserviceable, that problem needs to be addressed separately.
Load Sensing Proportioning Valves
A load sensing proportioning valve, often referred to as an LSPV, is used on some vehicles to influence rear braking according to vehicle load and suspension position. As load is added to the rear of the vehicle and the suspension position changes, the system can alter the braking force available at the rear.
A suspension lift can change the relationship the linkage uses as its reference. Without appropriate adjustment on a compatible system, the valve may no longer correspond to the vehicle's new static ride height in the way intended.
Whiteline's proportioning valve extension components are designed for compatible lifted applications so the rear brake bias can be adjusted back to the appropriate vehicle braking bias. The exact setup and adjustment procedure depends on the vehicle, so this work should follow the applicable technical information rather than relying on a generic setting.
An LSPV extension shouldn't be treated as a way to increase braking performance beyond the vehicle's intended setup. Its purpose is to address the effect that altered ride height can have on the existing proportioning arrangement.
Brake Line and Cable Checks
Brake lines, ABS wiring and handbrake cables should be inspected after a suspension lift to make sure they have appropriate routing and movement throughout the suspension's operating range. Checking only with the vehicle sitting at normal ride height may not reveal what happens as the axle or wheel moves towards full suspension extension.
Look for excessive tension, restricted movement, unsuitable routing, contact with surrounding components or other signs that the original mounting arrangement no longer provides sufficient movement. The inspection should consider the complete suspension travel relevant to the vehicle rather than simply whether a line or cable appears loose enough while parked.
A stretched line, damaged ABS lead or handbrake problem can also have causes unrelated to a suspension lift, including incorrect previous installation, damaged mounting hardware or component wear. If there is any uncertainty about the condition or routing of a braking-system component, have it inspected by a qualified technician.
Professional Installation
Brake systems are safety-critical, so extension and relocation components need to be installed and checked correctly. The work can involve brake-related mounting points, ABS wiring, handbrake cables or proportioning valve adjustment, depending on the application, and the complete installation needs to operate correctly throughout the suspension's movement.
Whiteline fitting services are available for compatible components, allowing the parts to be installed as part of the vehicle's suspension setup. Professional fitting is particularly worthwhile when the lift has changed several systems at once or when the correct brake proportioning adjustment needs to be confirmed.
Vehicle modifications must also comply with the requirements applying where the vehicle is registered and used. Suspension lift and modification rules can vary, so check the current requirements where the vehicle is registered and notify your insurer of applicable vehicle modifications.
Complete Your 4WD Lift
Brake extension components are only one consideration when increasing 4WD ride height. The complete suspension setup should be assessed because a lift can also affect wheel alignment, suspension travel, CV shaft angles and other components depending on the vehicle and type of lift.
If you're planning a height increase, start with a compatible 4x4 Lift Kit and identify any application-specific supporting components required for the new ride height. On suitable independent front suspension applications, a Diff Drop Kit may also be relevant where increased ride height changes front CV shaft operating angles.
Treating these parts as one suspension system helps avoid focusing on ride height while overlooking the components that need to continue moving correctly around it.
Find the Right Brake Extension Kit
Choose 4WD brake extension and relocation components from Whiteline to help maintain appropriate brake line, ABS lead, handbrake cable and proportioning valve positioning on compatible lifted applications. Use our vehicle or registration search to identify the components required for your vehicle rather than assuming every suspension lift needs the same brake parts.
Every Whiteline component is backed by our warranty, Fitment Guarantee and 30 Day Returns, giving you additional confidence when choosing parts for your 4WD suspension setup.
Lifted vehicles often need brake line kits, ABS components and brake valve linkage to keep everything working at the new ride height.
If you're unsure which brake-related components are required with your lift, or whether your existing lines, cables or valve linkage need to be repositioned, contact our team for help finding the correct parts and fitting solution.
