Take unwanted movement out of the drivetrain with Whiteline transmission parts focused on gearbox mounts, mount inserts and gearbox-to-crossmember mounting components. Designed for selected road and performance applications, these parts control movement around the transmission mounting system to create a more direct connection between the gearbox and chassis.
Unlike general transmission parts such as gears, bearings, seals or rebuild components, Whiteline's focus here is transmission mounting and drivetrain control. Depending on the application, an upgrade may supplement the existing factory mount with an insert, replace mounting bushes between the gearbox and crossmember, or replace the complete gearbox mount assembly.
Transmission Mounts and Drivetrain Control
A transmission or gearbox mount secures the gearbox to the vehicle structure while controlling how much it can move as drivetrain loads change. The mounting system also provides isolation between the drivetrain and body, helping manufacturers balance movement control with everyday refinement.
Under acceleration, deceleration and gear changes, torque can load the engine and transmission mounts in different directions. Some movement is intentional, but excessive compliance can make the drivetrain feel less directly connected to the chassis.
A performance transmission mount or firmer mounting solution reduces unwanted movement at the relevant mounting point. It doesn't increase engine output or change the internal operation of the transmission. Instead, its purpose is to control the physical movement of the gearbox more precisely as torque is applied and removed.
Engine and gearbox mounts also work as part of the same drivetrain mounting system. Where unwanted movement is present, the condition of both should be considered rather than assuming the gearbox mount is automatically responsible.
Factory Gearbox Mount Compliance
Factory gearbox mounts are generally designed to balance drivetrain control with noise and vibration isolation. On some applications, this includes voids within the rubber mounting structure that allow controlled movement and help isolate the cabin from drivetrain vibration.
Whiteline identifies this compliance as a source of less direct shift response on compatible applications. Its mount inserts are designed to fill specified voided areas in the factory transmission mount, reducing movement and creating a crisper feel through gear changes and when transitioning on and off the throttle.
This doesn't mean every factory gearbox mount is excessively soft or that every vehicle will benefit from the same degree of additional stiffness. Mount design varies significantly between vehicles, and the appropriate upgrade depends on the original mounting arrangement, transmission type and intended vehicle use.
Gearbox Mount Inserts and Complete Mounts
Whiteline uses several approaches to controlling transmission movement. The appropriate solution depends on whether the existing factory mount can be supplemented with an insert or whether the mounting components themselves need to be replaced.
Gearbox Mount Inserts
A gearbox mount insert works with a compatible factory mount rather than replacing the complete assembly. The insert occupies specified voided areas within the existing mount to reduce its compliance and limit unwanted transmission movement.
Whiteline refers to selected insert applications as its Positive Shift Kit, with product notes describing improved shift feel and response through reduced factory mount compliance. Because the insert relies on the existing mount, fitment needs to be confirmed for the specific mounting design and transmission configuration.
An insert shouldn't automatically be treated as a repair for a failed factory mount. If the original mount is cracked, separated, collapsed or otherwise damaged, its condition should be assessed before fitting an additional insert.
Gearbox-to-Crossmember Bushes
Some transmission mounting systems use separate bushes between the gearbox mounting arrangement and crossmember. Replacing these bushes can address excessive compliance or deterioration at those connection points without necessarily replacing the complete gearbox mount.
Whiteline's product information identifies synthetic elastomer on selected gearbox-to-crossmember bush applications. Because materials and constructions differ across the category, the complete parent page shouldn't describe every transmission mount or bush as polyurethane.
Complete Gearbox Mounts
A complete gearbox mount replaces the relevant mounting assembly rather than adding an insert to the existing component. This approach can be appropriate where the application uses a dedicated replacement mount or where greater control of transmission movement is required.
Complete mounts and inserts shouldn't be treated as interchangeable solutions. Their construction, installation and effect on drivetrain movement differ, so selection should be based on confirmed vehicle fitment and the intended use of the vehicle.
Gearbox Mount NVH and Driving Comfort
Reducing gearbox mount compliance can change the amount of noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) transmitted through the vehicle. This trade-off matters because the same compliance that allows additional drivetrain movement can also help isolate vibration from the cabin.
A firmer transmission mounting arrangement can create a more direct connection between the gearbox and chassis, which may contribute to a crisper shift feel on compatible applications. At the same time, reducing isolation can make drivetrain vibration or noise more noticeable.
The effect isn't identical across every mount or vehicle. Some Whiteline applications are designed to balance additional control with everyday refinement, while selected firmer mount configurations are specifically identified as increasing NVH.
Consider how the vehicle is used before choosing a transmission mount upgrade. Additional drivetrain feedback may be acceptable or desirable in a performance-focused vehicle but less appealing where maximum cabin refinement is the priority.
Signs of a Worn Gearbox Mount
A worn gearbox or transmission mount can allow excessive drivetrain movement, but symptoms alone shouldn't be used to diagnose the mount. Possible signs can include clunks as drivetrain load changes, excessive movement, vibration or a shift feel that has become less consistent.
These symptoms can also have other causes. Engine mounts, driveshaft or tailshaft components, CV joints, clutch components, shifter bushes and other drivetrain parts can create similar noises or sensations. Transmission behaviour can also result from problems unrelated to the mounting system itself.
Inspect the complete drivetrain mounting arrangement before replacing parts. Visible cracking, separation, deterioration or excessive movement around a mount can provide useful evidence, but if the source of a clunk, vibration or shift problem isn't clear, have the vehicle inspected by a qualified technician.
Where excessive movement or play originates in the gear-selection mechanism, Shifter Bushes may also need to be inspected.
Transmission Mount Installation
Transmission mount installation requires the gearbox and drivetrain to be supported correctly while the relevant mounting components are removed, supplemented or replaced. The exact procedure varies according to the vehicle, transmission and type of mounting component.
An insert may retain most of the original mount assembly, while gearbox-to-crossmember bushes or a complete replacement mount can require more extensive disassembly. Correct positioning and tightening procedures are important because the components are supporting and controlling a major drivetrain assembly.
Mount compatibility can also vary between manual, CVT and other transmission configurations. A component listed for one transmission type shouldn't be assumed to fit another configuration simply because the vehicle platform is otherwise similar.
If you're not experienced in safely supporting drivetrain components or replacing transmission mounts, professional installation is the appropriate option. A qualified technician can also inspect the surrounding engine and gearbox mounting system for wear before fitting the new components.
