Differential Bushings

Put power down hard and the differential tries to rotate in the opposite direction to the wheels.

Differential bushings are the only thing stopping it, and on a factory car they are soft enough to let it happen.

What Differential Bushings Do

The differential housing is bolted to the subframe or the chassis at two or three points, and every one of those mounts contains a bushing.

Their job is to hold the housing still while isolating the cabin from the gear noise, driveline vibration and shock that a differential produces.

That second requirement is why the factory fits soft rubber. A solidly mounted differential transmits a lot of noise into the body, and no manufacturer wants that on a road car.

The compromise that comes with it is movement. Under load the bushings deflect, the housing rotates and shifts, and everything the differential is doing happens slightly later and less precisely than it should.

Torque Reaction and Why the Diff Moves

This is the mechanism, and it is worth understanding properly.

Drive torque enters the differential through the pinion and leaves through the axles. The housing sits in between, and Newton's third law means it experiences an equal reaction in the opposite direction.

On acceleration that reaction tries to rotate the housing nose up. On deceleration it tries to rotate it the other way. Between the two, the housing is constantly being twisted against its mounts.

Soft bushings allow that rotation to happen freely. The housing moves, the energy stores in the rubber, and it releases when the load comes off.

That cycle is what produces the shunt people feel coming on and off the throttle, and the hop that appears when launching hard.

Bad Differential Bushing Symptoms

• A clunk from the rear when getting on or off the throttle
• Driveline shunt felt as a surge at low speed
• Wheel hop under hard acceleration
• Vibration through the floor that changes with throttle position
• Delayed or soft power delivery that does not match the engine output
• Visible movement of the differential housing when the car is rocked in gear
• Cracked, split or separated rubber at the mounting points
• A knock over bumps from the center of the rear

The throttle on and off clunk is the giveaway. Suspension noise does not change with throttle position, and a noise that appears exactly when torque reverses is coming from the driveline mounting.

Front Differential Bushings

All wheel drive and four wheel drive vehicles have the same problem at the front, with an extra consequence.

A front differential is subject to the same torque reaction, and the bushings mounting it to the subframe or crossmember deflect in the same way.

The difference is what else moves with it. The front differential feeds the CV shafts, so a housing that shifts under load changes the CV angles slightly, which adds wear on top of the movement.

On a lifted vehicle it compounds again, since the CV angles are already steeper than designed and any additional movement pushes them further.

Front diff bushings are also frequently harder to access than rear ones, which is why they get left when the rest of the drivetrain mounting is addressed.

Front and Rear Differential Mounts

Both ends use the same principle and the parts differ.

A rear differential mount carries the housing in a rear or all wheel drive layout, usually with a bushing at the front nose and one or two at the rear of the case. The nose mount takes most of the torque reaction, which is why it is often the first to fail.

A rear differential bushing set covers all of those positions, since replacing one and leaving the others concentrates load on the new part.

A rear diff bushing at the nose is sometimes available separately where that is the only one that has gone, which suits a car with otherwise sound mounting.

A differential mount bushing on a transverse all wheel drive layout sits differently again, bolting the rear drive unit into the subframe rather than carrying a traditional housing.

Check which positions a listing covers before ordering, since the mounting arrangement varies considerably between layouts.

Checking Differential Mounts

A load test tells you more than a visual inspection on these.

With the car safely supported and the handbrake off, have someone rock the driveshaft back and forth by hand while you watch the differential housing. Movement at the mounts means the bushings are deflecting rather than holding.

Look at the nose mount specifically for cracked or separated rubber, and for the housing sitting lower than it should relative to its bracket.

Check for witness marks where the housing has been contacting something it should not. A differential that moves far enough to touch a subframe or a heat shield has gone well past worn.

Listen to the car in gear at low speed. A clunk that arrives exactly as the throttle crosses from drive to overrun is the mounting rather than the gears.

Polyurethane, Solid and Factory Rubber

Three levels exist and the choice is genuinely a trade.

Factory rubber isolates the best and moves the most. For a quiet road car that is the right answer, and for anyone chasing power delivery it is the limitation.

Polyurethane holds the housing considerably better while retaining some isolation. The diff stays located, torque reaches the wheels without the delay, and the noise increase is noticeable rather than overwhelming.

Solid or aluminum mounts remove the movement entirely. On a track car that is exactly what is wanted, and on a street car the gear whine and driveline noise reaching the cabin is significant.

Most people are best served by the polyurethane option. It delivers most of the control for a fraction of the noise penalty, which is the balance that suits a car still being driven on the road.

What Changes When the Diff Stays Put

The difference is felt immediately and in more places than people expect.

Power delivery becomes noticeably more direct than before. Torque goes to the tires rather than into rotating the housing first, so the car responds to the throttle rather than taking up slack.

Wheel hop reduces or disappears, since the stored energy that produced it has nowhere to go.

Shift quality improves on a manual, because the driveline is not moving between the gearbox and the axles while you are trying to engage a gear.

Component life improves along with how the car feels. A housing that rocks under load puts shock through the driveshaft, the universal or CV joints and the mounting points themselves.

And the car becomes more predictable when the tires are near their limit, since the torque arriving at them is smooth rather than arriving in a spike.

Differential Bushing Removal

These are among the harder bushings on a car to get out, and planning for that matters.

The bushings sit in thick housings designed to carry serious load, and they are a heavy interference fit that has usually corroded in place.

A press is the clean method where the housing can be supported. Where it cannot, a dedicated differential bushing removal tool draws the bushing out using a threaded spindle against a plate, which is why those tools exist as a product in their own right.

Burning the rubber out is the common workaround and it leaves the outer steel sleeve in the housing, which then has to be cut or collapsed without scoring the bore.

The differential usually has to come down at least partially, which means supporting it properly and dealing with the driveshaft and axle connections.

Clean the bore before fitting the new bushing, since a bushing pressed into a corroded housing does not sit square and does not hold the location it was bought for.

Replacement Cost and Doing It Once

The parts are inexpensive and the labor is where the figure comes from.

Access is what drives the labor figure on this job. A differential that drops easily makes this a reasonable job, and one buried behind exhaust, heat shielding and suspension components takes considerably longer.

Because the access is the expensive part, doing all the mounting points at once is the only sensible approach. A new firm bushing at one mount against tired ones at the others leaves the housing still moving and loads the new one unevenly.

Subframe bushings are worth considering at the same time on a unibody car, since the differential mounts to the subframe and the subframe mounts to the body. Firming one and leaving the other means the movement simply shifts outward.

Budget for new fasteners wherever they are corroded or single use.

Find Differential Bushings for Your Vehicle

Differential bushings are part of our bushings lineup, and subframe bushings lock down the rest of an IRS rear end.

Select your vehicle to see the differential bushings and mounts available for it, in front and rear fitments. If the car clunks when you lift off or hops when you launch it, the differential mounting is where to look before anything else in the driveline.
