Strut and shock absorber parts work together with springs and suspension mounting components to control wheel movement, support the suspension and isolate unwanted vibration. Shock absorbers control the rate of suspension movement, while struts combine damping with a structural role in the suspension.
The mounting components around these systems matter too. A strut mount connects the top of the strut assembly to the vehicle body, while bushes and bearings can provide isolation or allow the assembly to move as designed. Understanding the difference between shocks, struts and their mounts makes it easier to identify which part of the suspension actually requires attention.
What Do Shock Absorbers Do?
Shock absorbers control the rate at which the suspension compresses and rebounds. Springs support the vehicle and allow the wheels to move over changes in the road, while the dampers control that movement so the suspension does not continue oscillating after a bump.
Without effective damping, the spring can continue moving after it has been compressed or extended.
Shock absorbers therefore help control:
Compression after the wheel encounters a bump
Rebound as the suspension extends again
Repeated bouncing or oscillation
Body movement during braking, acceleration and cornering
Tyre contact as the suspension responds to the road
Their condition can have a significant effect on how consistently the suspension behaves.
How Do Shock Absorbers Work?
Shock absorbers create resistance to suspension movement, converting movement energy into heat that can be dissipated. In a conventional hydraulic damper, a piston moves through fluid as the suspension compresses and rebounds.
The fluid is forced through controlled passages and valves, creating resistance to the piston's movement.
Compression damping controls the suspension as it moves into compression. Rebound damping controls how it extends again.
The amount and characteristics of that resistance depend on the damper design and valving.
A shock absorber works with the spring rather than replacing its function. The spring supports load and stores energy as it compresses, while the damper controls how quickly that energy is released.
What's the Difference Between a Strut and a Shock Absorber?
Both struts and shock absorbers provide damping, but a strut also forms a structural part of the suspension assembly. A conventional shock absorber primarily controls movement and is not normally responsible for locating the wheel.
A strut combines damping with other suspension functions.
Depending on the design, a strut assembly can incorporate:
A coil spring
An upper strut mount
A bearing
Spring seats
A bump stop
Dust protection
On many front suspension systems, the strut also moves as the wheels steer.
Because the strut is structural, replacing or servicing its mounting components can involve more disassembly than replacing a separately mounted shock absorber.
What Does a Strut Mount Do?
A strut mount connects the upper end of the strut assembly to the vehicle body or chassis. It provides a secure mounting point while often incorporating compliant material to help isolate vibration and impact from the body.
Its exact function depends on the suspension position and design.
A mount can affect more than noise isolation. Its position establishes an important upper suspension mounting point, and some designs incorporate a bearing that allows the strut to rotate during steering.
Front Strut Mounts and Bearings
On applicable front strut suspension systems, the upper mount can include a bearing that allows the strut assembly to rotate as the driver turns the steering wheel.
Wear in the mount or bearing can contribute to symptoms such as:
Knocking or clunking
Noise while steering
Binding or roughness during steering movement
Excessive movement around the upper mount
These symptoms can have other causes, so the mount should be inspected rather than diagnosed from noise alone.
Rear Strut Mounts
Rear strut mounts connect the upper part of the rear strut or damper assembly to the body where that suspension design requires one.
Rear mounts do not necessarily perform the same steering function as front mounts, but they still need to locate the suspension component correctly and manage loads transferred through the mounting point.
A worn rear mount can contribute to knocking or unwanted movement, particularly over uneven surfaces.
Strut and Shock Absorber Mounting Parts
Mounting components connect dampers and struts to the vehicle while allowing the suspension to operate through its intended movement. Different designs can provide isolation, articulation, alignment correction or a combination of these functions.
Correct fitment is important because mounting dimensions and functions vary significantly between suspension designs.
Strut Mounts
A strut mount forms the connection between the upper strut assembly and the vehicle structure.
Replacement may be considered when the existing mount is worn, damaged or being serviced as part of strut or spring work.
Mount condition is worth checking whenever the strut assembly is removed because accessing the mount again can require repeating much of the same disassembly.
Caster and Camber Offset Strut Mounts
Some upper strut mounting designs can reposition the top of the strut relative to its original mounting location.
Changing that position can alter suspension geometry, including camber or caster where the suspension design allows it.
These mounts serve a different purpose from a standard replacement mount. They should be selected according to the geometry correction required, and a professional wheel alignment is necessary after installation.
Strut Mount Bushings
Bushings within a strut mounting arrangement can provide compliance between connected components, helping accommodate movement and isolate vibration.
A worn bushing can allow unwanted movement or noise at the mounting point.
Bush design, dimensions and function are application-specific. Replacement components should therefore be matched to the suspension arrangement rather than selected solely by appearance.
How Long Do Shock Absorbers and Strut Mounts Last?
There is no fixed service life for shock absorbers or strut mounts. Their condition depends on road surfaces, vehicle load, driving conditions, suspension setup, environmental exposure and the design of the components themselves.
Rather than replacing them automatically at a particular distance, inspect them as part of regular suspension servicing.
Vehicles regularly driven on rough roads or carrying significant loads may place different demands on dampers and mounts from vehicles predominantly used on smoother roads.
Any change in suspension behaviour, new noise or visible damage is also a reason to inspect the system.
What Are the Signs of Worn Shocks or Strut Mounts?
Worn shocks and worn strut mounts can produce different symptoms, although some overlap. Excessive bouncing or poor control after bumps can point towards damper performance, while knocking or movement around the top of a strut can indicate a mounting issue.
Signs worth investigating include:
Continued bouncing after a bump
Increased body movement
Oil leakage from a damper
Physical damage to a shock or strut
Knocking over uneven surfaces
Clunks or roughness while steering
Visible deterioration around a strut mount
Excessive movement at mounting points
None of these symptoms should be treated as a diagnosis on their own.
How to Test Shock Absorbers
A shock absorber inspection normally begins with a visual check for damage, leakage and problems with the mounting points.
A technician can then assess suspension control and compare vehicle behaviour across the front and rear. A road test may help identify excessive movement, noise or poor damping.
Simple bounce tests have limitations and should not be treated as a definitive assessment of damper condition.
Inspect surrounding components at the same time, including strut mounts, bushes and other suspension joints.
Other Causes to Rule Out
Knocking, bouncing or changes in steering behaviour can also result from:
A qualified technician can inspect the complete system before parts are replaced unnecessarily.
How Are Strut Mounts Replaced?
Replacing a strut mount commonly requires the strut assembly to be removed from the vehicle and dismantled. Where a coil spring surrounds the strut, the spring must be safely compressed before the upper mount can be removed.
This makes correct equipment and procedure critical.
What the Job Involves
Depending on the suspension design, replacement may involve:
Safely raising and supporting the vehicle
Removing the wheel
Disconnecting the strut from relevant suspension components
Removing the strut assembly
Compressing the coil spring with appropriate equipment
Removing and inspecting the upper mount and bearing
Installing the replacement components
Reassembling and refitting the strut
Tightening fasteners to the manufacturer's specifications
Completing a wheel alignment where suspension geometry has been disturbed
Other components exposed during disassembly should also be inspected for wear or damage.
Strut and Spring Safety
Coil springs store substantial energy. Attempting to dismantle a loaded strut without appropriate spring-compression equipment can cause serious injury.
Use equipment designed for the spring and strut assembly and follow the applicable workshop procedure. Never work underneath a vehicle supported only by a jack.
If you do not have suitable spring-compression equipment and experience with strut assemblies, have the work performed by a qualified technician.
Choosing Strut and Shock Absorber Parts
Choose strut and shock absorber parts according to the vehicle's suspension design, component position and the specific part requiring service or correction.
Do not assume a noise or change in ride automatically means the shock absorber itself has failed. Inspect the damper, mounts, bushes and surrounding suspension before deciding which component needs replacement.
