Coil Spring Spacers for 0

Two quite different products share the name coil spring spacer, and buying the wrong one for your is an easy mistake to make.

One raises the vehicle by sitting above or below the spring. The other sits between the coils and changes how the spring behaves under load. The two of them solve quite different problems.

What a Coil Spring Spacer Is

In the broadest sense, a spacer is anything that occupies space in the spring's load path and changes where the vehicle sits as a result.

A seat spacer is a solid puck fitted above or below the coil, at the spring seat. It pushes the spring further from its mounting point, which raises the body by roughly the thickness of the spacer.

A coil spacer in the other sense is a shaped insert that fits between two coils of the spring itself, taking up the gap and preventing those coils closing fully.

Both are called coil spring spacers in listings, both raise ride height, and the way they achieve it is completely different.

Seat Spacers and Spring Spacer Lift

A seat spacer is what most people mean by a spring spacer lift.

A coil spring spacer lift works by sitting at the top or bottom of the spring, adding its thickness to the overall stack. The spring itself is unchanged, the rate is unchanged, and the body simply sits higher.

That makes it the cheapest route to a modest lift, and the reason leveling kits are built around exactly this part.

Common sizes run in the one to two inch range, with a 2 inch coil spacer being about as far as most applications go before the geometry needs addressing properly.

The limitation is what it does not change. Suspension travel reduces by the amount of the spacer, since the spring is now closer to full compression at the same ride height. Push a seat spacer too far and the suspension runs out of compression travel before the bump stops expect it to.

Rubber Coil Spring Spacers Between the Coils

The insert type works differently and solves a different complaint.

A rubber coil spring spacer wedges between two adjacent coils. Under compression those coils can no longer close against each other, which means the spring has fewer active coils doing the work.

Fewer active coils means a stiffer spring overall. The rate goes up, the vehicle sits higher under the same load, and a sagging spring gets some of its capacity back.

That makes these useful on a vehicle with tired springs that carries weight or tows occasionally, where the issue is sag under load rather than ride height when empty.

They are also removable, which a seat spacer is not without dismantling the suspension. Fitting them for a towing trip and taking them out afterward is a legitimate use.

What they are not is a substitute for correctly rated springs on a vehicle that is permanently loaded.

Adjustable Coil Spring Spacers

Adjustable versions let the height be set rather than fixed by the part.

A threaded or stacked design allows the effective thickness to be changed, so the ride height can be dialed in to suit the vehicle's actual accessory load rather than an assumed figure.

That matters on a vehicle where the weight changes or where the factory rake needs correcting by an amount that does not match a standard spacer size.

The same limitations apply to the adjustable type. Adjustment changes where the vehicle sits and does nothing for spring rate or damping, so a vehicle that sags under load still sags, just from a different starting height.

Set the height with the vehicle carrying its normal load and the suspension settled rather than on the hoist.

Front and Rear Coil Spring Spacers

Both ends use them and the reasons differ.

Front spacers are usually fitted to remove factory rake, raising the nose to match a rear that already sits higher. That is the leveling kit application in a nutshell.

A rear coil spring spacer is more often fitted to correct sag, restore height on a vehicle that squats under load, or match a front that has already been raised.

Fitting one end alone changes the vehicle's attitude, so it is worth deciding what the target stance is before ordering rather than discovering it afterward.

Rear spacers are generally easier to fit, since rear coil springs on many vehicles can be removed by lowering the suspension rather than compressing the spring.

What a Spacer Does Not Fix

Worth stating clearly, because spacers get asked to do more than they can.

They add no load carrying capacity at all. A seat spacer raises the vehicle and the spring still has the rate it always had, so a vehicle that sagged under load will sag from a higher starting point.

They do nothing to improve the damping either. Raising the vehicle on the same shocks means the dampers work in a different part of their range, and on larger spacers they can run short of travel.

They bring no geometry correction hardware with them. Camber and caster move as soon as ride height changes, and a spacer brings no correction hardware with it.

And they do not restore a broken or badly sagged spring. A spring that has lost its rate needs replacing, and packing it up only disguises the symptom.

Spacers Against Lowering and Raised Springs

The honest comparison, since a spacer is the cheap option and not always the right one.

A spacer changes ride height using the spring you already have. It costs little, it goes in quickly, and the spring rate stays exactly as it was.

Raised or heavy duty springs change the rate as well as the height, which is what actually solves sag under load. They cost more and they involve replacing the spring rather than packing it up.

The deciding question is what the vehicle is doing. If it sits level and empty and you want more clearance or a flatter stance, a spacer does the job properly.

If it sags under weight, tows poorly or has lost height as the springs aged, a spacer treats the symptom while the spring stays tired underneath it.

Plenty of good builds use both, with correctly rated springs for the load and a modest spacer to fine tune the stance afterward.

Suspension Travel and Bump Stops

This is the technical limit worth understanding before choosing a thickness.

A seat spacer raises the body without moving the suspension's internal limits. The bump stop is still in the same place relative to the arm, so the distance from static ride height to full compression is now shorter by the spacer's thickness.

On a modest spacer that reduction is acceptable. On a larger one the suspension hits the bump stops sooner and more often, which feels like a harsh ride over bumps that the vehicle used to absorb.

Longer or progressive bump stops address it, and some applications supply them with the spacer for exactly that reason.

If the vehicle starts crashing over bumps after a spacer lift, running out of compression travel is the first thing to check.

How to Install Coil Spring Spacers Safely

How to install a coil spring spacer depends entirely on which of the two types you have.

A between-coil insert is the simpler of the two to fit. With the suspension unloaded so the coils are at their widest, the insert is worked into position between two coils and seated fully. No spring compressor is required on most applications.

A seat spacer needs the spring out, or at least released from its seat. On a strut suspension that means spring compressors, and compressed coil springs hold serious stored energy with severe injury the consequence of releasing one unexpectedly.

On a separate spring and damper setup, the spring can usually be removed by supporting the hub and lowering the arm, which is considerably safer and quicker.

Clean the seat and check it for corrosion while access is there, and fit a new coil spring insulator at the same time since both occupy the same space.

Torque everything at ride height with the vehicle on its wheels, then have the alignment set, since the height change has moved camber and toe.
