Trailing Arm Bushing for 0

A trailing arm is the only thing stopping a rear wheel moving backward when you hit the brakes.

On your , its bushings absorb that load, and when they soften the wheel starts moving fore and aft on its own.

What a Trailing Arm Holds Against

A rear trailing arm runs fore and aft, pivoting on the body or subframe at its forward end and picking up the hub at the rear. Catalogs list it as a trailing arm bushing, a rear trailing arm bushing or a suspension trailing arm bushing depending on the supplier.

Braking is what loads the arm the hardest. The wheel wants to keep traveling while the car slows, and the arm is what resists that, in tension or compression depending on the layout.

Acceleration loads the arm in the other direction. On a driven axle the torque reaction tries to push the hub forward, and the same arm resists that too.

The other arms in a multi link rear end handle sideways location, camber and toe. Fore and aft is the trailing arm's job alone, which is why its bushings are the largest in most rear suspensions.

That concentration of load into one joint per side is the reason these fail while lateral arm bushings on the same car are still serviceable.

Semi Trailing Arms and the Angle

A semi trailing arm suspension does something more complicated and it is worth understanding.

A pure trailing arm pivots on an axis perpendicular to the car, so the wheel moves straight up and down with no change in camber or toe.

A semi trailing arm pivots on an axis set at an angle, somewhere between perpendicular and parallel to the centerline. As the wheel moves through its travel, that angled axis makes it change camber and toe at the same time.

That behavior is something designers built in deliberately. Designers used the angle to build in gentle toe-in under compression, which helps stability without adding any extra links.

The consequence for bushings is that any play lets the hub move along a path that changes two angles at once. A worn semi trailing arm bushing therefore produces camber and toe variation together, which is why the symptoms are more confusing than on a simple trailing arm.

Wheelbase, Thrust Angle and Dog Tracking

This is the consequence most people never connect to a bushing.

If a trailing arm bushing allows fore and aft movement, that wheel sits slightly further back or forward than the one on the other side.

The wheelbase is now different left to right, which means the rear axle is no longer square to the car's centerline. That misalignment is what gets measured as thrust angle.

A car with a thrust angle problem travels slightly crabbed, with the rear tracking a fraction off the line the front is taking. The driver compensates with a small steering input held permanently, which is why the wheel sits off center on a straight road.

Four wheel alignment measures it, and a rack will report thrust angle as out of specification. What it cannot do is correct it, because the cause is a joint that moves rather than a setting that is wrong.

That is why a car can be aligned repeatedly and still track crooked while the bushings are the actual fault.

Bad Trailing Arm Bushing Symptoms

The signs point at braking and acceleration rather than cornering, which separates them from most suspension wear.

A clunk from the rear when braking or getting on the throttle is the clearest, since that is exactly when the arm is loaded.

Wheel hop under hard acceleration on a driven axle follows, because the hub is free to move fore and aft as torque arrives and releases.

A steering wheel that sits off center while the car tracks straight points at thrust angle, which points back here.

Rear tire wear with no alignment fault recorded, and alignment that will not hold between services, both come from the same movement.

Vagueness that arrives under load and disappears on a smooth road is the subtle one, since these bushings only deflect when there is force to deflect them.

Trailing Arm Bushings on a Solid Axle

The same component appears on live axle vehicles doing a related job under heavier loads.

A four link or three link rear end uses trailing arms running forward from the axle housing to the chassis, controlling fore and aft position and resisting axle rotation under power.

Those arms carry the full braking and acceleration torque of a solid axle rather than one hub, so the bushings are larger and the loads considerably higher.

Axle wrap is the failure that owners actually notice. The housing winds up against soft bushings under power, stores that energy and releases it, which produces hop pulling away hard or in low range.

Lifted vehicles make it worse, since the arms sit at a steeper angle and resist rotation less effectively than they did at standard height.

Firmer bushings stop the wind up before it starts, so torque reaches the wheels instead of twisting the housing, and the driveshaft and universal joints stop seeing shock loading.

Rubber, Polyurethane and What Each Gives Up

Material choice matters more at this joint than at most, because the loading has two components.

Factory rubber deflects under braking load, which absorbs driveline shock and road noise. It also means the hub moves fore and aft every time you slow down, and the geometry moves with it.

Polyurethane holds its position under that load, which keeps the wheelbase constant and the thrust angle where it should be. Braking feels more settled and the rear stops shifting under power.

The cost is that shock and noise now reach the body rather than being absorbed, and on a car with a solid rear axle there is already plenty of both.

Voided polyurethane designs sit between the two, retaining compliance in one direction while resisting it in another, which suits a road car better than a solid bushing does.

Why Trailing Arm Bushings Are Hard to Remove

The number of people searching for a trailing arm bushing tool explains the job better than any description.

These are large bushings pressed into thick housings, usually with limited or no access from behind, and frequently bonded in place by decades of corrosion.

A workshop press works where the arm can be removed from the car and supported. On platforms where the arm is awkward to extract, that alone is most of the labor.

A trailing arm bushing removal tool draws the bushing out using a threaded spindle pulling against a plate, which works in situ where a press cannot reach.

Platform specific tools exist because the housing dimensions vary so much, and a generic puller frequently will not fit the available space.

Burning the rubber out leaves the outer sleeve in the housing, which then has to be cut without scoring the bore, and a scored bore will not hold a new bushing square.

Replacement Cost and What Drives It

The parts are inexpensive and the figure comes almost entirely from access.

Where the arm comes off easily and a press is available, the job is straightforward and the cost reflects the time.

Where the arm is buried, or the bushing has to be drawn out in situ with a specialist tool, it climbs.

Doing both sides at once is the sensible approach regardless. The access is identical, the second side has done the same miles, and one firm bushing against one perished one gives different rear behavior on each side of the car.

Budget for a four wheel alignment afterward rather than a front only one, since thrust angle is exactly what needs checking once these have been replaced.

Fitting and Setting Them Properly on Your

Press the new bushings in square with the housing supported, since a bushing fitted crooked will not locate the arm correctly.

Note the bushing orientation carefully before removing anything. Many trailing arm bushings are voided or directional, with the voids positioned to give compliance in one plane and stiffness in another, and fitting one rotated defeats the design.

Torque the pivot bolts with the car on its wheels at ride height rather than hanging. A bushing clamped at full droop is preloaded from the first bump and will fail early.

Use silicone or PTFE based lubricant on polyurethane rather than petroleum grease, which degrades it over time.

Have the rear alignment and thrust angle checked once the car is back on the ground and has been driven far enough to settle.
