Lowering Springs for 0

Lowering springs are the most cost effective handling upgrade available and the one most often bought on the wrong criteria. Choose lowering springs on drop height alone and you end up with a car that looks right and drives worse than it did before.

Every lowering kit here is a matched set of four springs, with the front and rear rates published alongside the drop so you can see what you are actually buying rather than just how low it sits.

What You Feel the First Time You Drive Your

The change arrives immediately and it is not subtle.

Turn in sharpens because the car stops leaning before it starts turning. That delay between moving the wheel and the car responding, the lean then go feeling that most road cars have from the factory, largely disappears. The car takes a set quickly and holds it rather than continuing to settle through the corner.

Under braking the nose stays put instead of diving, which keeps the car balanced going into a corner rather than pitching forward and unloading the rear. Under power it squats less, so the front stays planted and the steering keeps meaning something. Over a crest or through a dip it settles in one movement rather than continuing to move after the road has stopped asking it to.

All of that comes from two things working together. The lower center of gravity reduces how much weight transfers every time you do anything, and the higher rate resists whatever transfer remains.

Lowering Springs vs Coilovers

Lowering springs vs coilovers is the question most people are weighing, and it deserves a straight answer rather than a sales one.

Coilovers give you adjustable ride height and, on most units, adjustable damping. That is genuine flexibility if you want to fine tune the car, run different heights, or change the setup between street and track. What it costs you is a considerably larger bill, more complexity, and a car that arrives needing to be dialed in rather than one that arrives resolved.

Lowering springs give you a developed drop at a developed rate, fitted to dampers you either already have or replace alongside them. Simpler, much cheaper, and on a street car a well matched spring and damper combination frequently behaves better than a budget coilover set at whatever height looked right in the driveway.

The honest version of coilovers vs lowering springs is that coilovers suit people who want to tune and lowering springs suit people who want a result. Both of them benefit from the sway bars, bushings and geometry parts underneath, so that part of the decision does not change either way.

If you are only lowering the car once and then leaving it alone, the adjustability you are paying for on a coilover is adjustability you will use exactly one time.

How Much Drop Is Worth Having on Your

The instinct is to take the biggest number in the catalog, and it is worth resisting.

Every inch of drop is bump travel you no longer have. Suspension needs room to move, and once it runs out the bump stops take over, which is not suspension at all but an impact. The tire skips rather than following the road, and you lose exactly the grip you were trying to find. On a rough back road a moderately lowered car is genuinely faster and considerably more pleasant than an aggressively lowered one.

There is a practical cost as well, and it is the one people underestimate. Steep driveways, speed bumps, parking garage entrances and curbs all become things you plan around rather than ignore.

For most street cars a drop somewhere around an inch to an inch and a half delivers the bulk of the handling benefit while leaving a car you can still use. Larger drops belong on cars that see track time or on builds where the rest of the suspension has been addressed to suit.

Front and rear figures within the same kit are often different, and that is deliberate. A balanced drop is rarely the same number at each end, and getting the rake right matters to how the car sits and how it behaves.

Will Lowering Springs Ruin Your Ride?

Everyone asks this and the answer is more nuanced than either extreme you will hear online.

The ride will be firmer, because you are fitting a higher rate spring and more of the road will reach you than before. What decides whether that is acceptable or miserable is the rate and the spring design rather than the simple fact of lowering.

Our springs use a progressive rate, meaning they start softer over the first part of the travel and firm up as they compress. Small inputs like expansion joints and coarse pavement get absorbed by the softer portion, so the car stays civilized at the speeds you spend most of your time at. Load it up in a corner and the spring firms into its supportive range exactly when you want it to.

That is a very different experience from a cheap set of aggressively rated springs that are firm from the first millimeter of travel. If ride quality matters to you, look at the rate rather than the badge.

Does Your Need New Shocks Too?

Not always, and be skeptical of anyone who tells you it is either mandatory or never necessary.

These springs are engineered to work with both factory and quality aftermarket dampers, so a set fitted to healthy stock shocks will perform as intended on most applications. If your dampers are in good condition and the drop is moderate, you are fine.

What changes the answer is the condition of what you already have. A worn shock trying to control a shorter, stiffer spring will not cope, and you will feel it. The car goes bouncy or floaty despite being stiffer, it needs more than one movement to settle after a bump, and it never feels resolved no matter what else you change.

If your has serious mileage on original dampers, do both at the same time. The labor overlaps almost entirely, so doing them together costs far less than doing them a year apart.

The Alignment Nobody Budgets For

Lowering changes your suspension geometry the moment the car settles, and this is where people get caught out financially.

The arms swing through a different part of their arc, so camber goes negative and toe moves with it. On plenty of platforms the car ends up outside specification with nothing worn at all, and the factory adjustment range is nowhere near enough to bring it back.

Budget for the alignment as part of the job rather than as an afterthought. On some cars you will also need camber bolts, adjustable arms or offset bushings to give the aligner the range to work with, and on lowered strut cars roll center correction is worth understanding before you decide the job is finished.

A lowered car running an uncorrected alignment will destroy the inside edge of a good set of tires within a few thousand miles, and it will never feel as planted as it looks.

Spring Compressors, Bump Stops and Settling on Your

Compressed coil springs hold a serious amount of energy and a compressor slipping is genuinely dangerous, so if you are not properly equipped for this, hand it to a shop.

Check your bump stops while everything is apart. On a lowered car they are doing more work than the factory intended, and the right stop is part of doing the job properly rather than an optional extra.

Torque suspension bushings with the car on its wheels at ride height rather than hanging on the lift, because a bushing clamped at full droop sits preloaded in a position the suspension never returns to and will bind from the first mile.

Get the alignment done straight away, then drive the car a few hundred miles and have it checked again. New springs settle slightly as they bed in, so the numbers set on day one will have moved by the time the car is properly run in.
