Check and adjust wheel alignment at the track or in the garage with Whiteline wheel alignment tools. The Whiteline Track Day String Wheel Aligner provides a portable string-based setup for measuring wheel position and checking toe without relying on a full workshop alignment machine.
Designed for enthusiasts, track-day drivers and workshops that want a repeatable way to check alignment between sessions, the kit combines two alignment frames with retractable strings and a measuring ruler in a hard carry case. It gives you a practical way to monitor alignment changes when fine-tuning a suspension setup.
What Is a String Wheel Alignment Kit?
A string wheel alignment kit creates straight reference lines along the sides of the vehicle. Measurements between those reference strings and the wheel rims can then be used to assess the direction each wheel is pointing.
For toe measurement, the distance from the string to the front and rear edges of a wheel rim is compared. A difference between those measurements indicates that the wheel is pointing inward or outward relative to the established reference line.
String alignment is a mechanical measuring method rather than an electronic or laser alignment system. The quality of the result therefore depends heavily on careful setup, accurate measurement and a suitable working surface.
The Whiteline Track Day String Wheel Aligner packages this principle into a portable system that can be transported to the circuit or used in the garage.
Can You Do a Wheel Alignment at Home or at the Track?
A string alignment tool can be useful for DIY wheel alignment checks and trackside suspension setup, particularly when you want to monitor or adjust toe without travelling to an alignment workshop between every change.
At a track day, this can be useful when suspension settings have been changed or when you want to check whether the alignment remains where you expect it to be between sessions. In the garage, the same process can provide a repeatable reference when working on a suspension setup.
However, a string kit shouldn't automatically be treated as a replacement for a professional wheel alignment machine.
A professional alignment remains the appropriate choice when you need a comprehensive alignment check, when the vehicle has undergone major suspension or steering work, when alignment problems haven't been diagnosed, or when accurate road setup is the priority. Professional equipment can also measure alignment parameters that aren't directly measured by a basic string-and-ruler setup.
The Whiteline tool is best viewed as a practical way to bring wheel alignment checking and toe adjustment capability to the garage or trackside environment.
Which Alignment Angles Can a String Kit Measure?
The primary alignment measurement available with a string setup is toe. Toe describes whether the wheels point slightly towards or away from each other when viewed from above.
With correctly established reference strings, measurements are taken between each wheel rim and the string at the front and rear of the rim. Comparing those distances provides the information needed to determine the wheel's toe position relative to the reference line.
Measuring Toe with String Alignment
Accurate toe measurement depends on establishing the reference strings correctly before measuring the wheels. If the strings aren't positioned consistently, the resulting measurements can be misleading even if the ruler readings themselves are accurate.
The same measurement points should be used on each wheel, and the wheel or rim should be checked for anything that could distort the reading.
Whiteline's published WTK004 information doesn't specifically state that the tool measures camber, caster or thrust angle, so those capabilities shouldn't be assumed from the product description.
Camber requires an appropriate camber measuring method or tool. Caster measurement generally requires additional procedures and equipment. Where a complete wheel alignment is required, use appropriate professional alignment equipment.
How Do You Set Up a String Wheel Alignment?
A useful string alignment begins with the vehicle positioned on a suitable, level surface. Tyre pressures and vehicle condition should be checked before making alignment decisions, as setup inconsistencies can affect the usefulness of your measurements.
Position the alignment frames and strings so that the strings form stable reference lines along the sides of the vehicle. The strings need to be established correctly relative to the vehicle before measuring wheel position.
Once the reference is established, measure from the string to consistent points at the front and rear edges of each wheel rim. The difference between those measurements can then be used to assess toe.
Small measurement errors can become significant when you're dealing with wheel alignment, so don't rush the setup. Recheck the string position and repeat measurements before making adjustments.
After an adjustment, settle the suspension as appropriate and measure again rather than assuming the change produced the intended result.
For road vehicles or after significant steering and suspension changes, a professional wheel alignment is still recommended to verify the complete setup.
What's Included in the Whiteline String Wheel Aligner?
The Whiteline Track Day String Wheel Aligner is a portable wheel alignment tool designed around the equipment needed to establish string reference lines and take measurements.
The kit includes:
- 2 alignment frames
- 2 retractable strings
- 1 measuring ruler
- A hard carry case for transport and storage
The portable format makes the kit particularly relevant to track-day use, where access to a workshop alignment machine may not be practical between sessions.
Rather than improvising a homemade string alignment arrangement, the dedicated frames and retractable strings provide a reusable setup that can be packed away and transported with other track-day equipment.
Track Day Wheel Alignment and Tyre Setup
Wheel alignment is only one part of preparing a vehicle for consistent track sessions. Tyre pressure, suspension settings and the condition of steering and suspension components can all influence how the vehicle behaves.
Pairing alignment checks with consistent tyre pressure measurements can make trackside setup more systematic. Use Tyre Pressure Gauges to monitor cold and hot tyre pressures and record your readings between sessions.
Where additional alignment adjustment is required, application-specific components such as Camber Bolts, Toe Arms and other Alignment Parts can provide adjustment on compatible suspension systems.
These components should be selected according to the vehicle and required alignment correction rather than fitted simply to create more adjustment. After significant suspension or steering changes, have the complete alignment checked using appropriate equipment.
